(AP) — Whether to sell hunting licenses and offer bounties for shooting down drones in a small Colorado town will likely be decided by voters.

The Deer Trail town board deadlocked on the proposal in a 3-3 vote Tuesday night, sending the issue to voters. However, the town of 550 needs to come up with money to pay for the special election first.

Phillip Steel drafted the proposal and says it’s meant to be a symbolic protest against surveillance. Under the proposal, the town 55 miles east of Denver would offer $25 hunting permits for drones and a $100 reward for shooting down federally operated unmanned aircraft with a shotgun.

The Federal Aviation Administration has warned that people who fire at drones could be prosecuted or fined.
