State Supreme Court upholds woman’s murder conviction

AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has affirmed the conviction of a Lawrence woman in a beating death.Kansas-Supreme-Court

Shanna Friday was sentenced in 2008 to about 14 years in prison for the death of 62-year-old Jerry Deshazer, who bled to death from a head wound he suffered at his Lawrence home.

On appeal, Friday’s attorney said comments from a prosecutor strayed from the evidence in the case because she urged the jury to find Friday guilty and give Deshazer back his dignity.

The state Supreme Court said Friday that the comment was a “harmless error.” The court also said the comments were made, in part, to counter the defense counsel’s attack on Deshazer’s reputation.

The court also rejected several other of Friday’s arguments for appeal.
