The Kansas State NAACP Conference of Branches has enlisted the assistance of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), the ACLU’s Voting Rights Project, and the ACLU foundation of Kansas & Western Missouri to represent the NAACP Kansas State Conference in civil ligation to be filed in federal district court challenging the State of Kansas’s proof of citizenship requirement for the purposes of voter registration.
The NAACP has been an active advocate and strong proponent of voting rights for all citizens and firmly believes that the proof of citizenship requirement in Kansas has or will have an adverse impact on the right of Kansas residents to vote without suppression.
The Kansas State NAACP joins in an effort with other agencies who share the position that all Kansas State citizens have a right to vote without additional state requirements that provide cumbersome or harmful to Kansas citizens right to vote.
“The NAACP will do whatever it takes to ensure the fair and equal rights of Kansas citizens to vote without undue state requirements or criteria. Rather than enacting regulations and laws to prevent voting, our state should spend the time helping to increase the voting turnout to ensure we have representation that fairly reflects our state demographics”, noted Dr. Glenda Overstreet, President of the NAACP Kansas State Conference”.
