Daniel Parker, 27, Junction City, was found guilty of first degree murder in Riley County District Court Thursday.

Parker was accused of killing Frederick Beverly, 21, Manhattan, in the early morning hours of January 1st, 2012, while Beverly was standing outside of the motorcycle club he was a member of. Parker took the stand Thursday morning as the defenses first witness. Parker had testified that he did not intend to kill anyone when he opened fire on the club house of the “Assassin Street Rydaz.”
Parker said that he drove by twice and never saw anyone outside and that he had never seen Beverly before in his life. The defense then called Dr. George Hough, the psychiatrist who examined Parker a year after he was arrested. Hough stated that Parker did suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but at the time of the killing Parker was aware of his actions. Vicky Parker, Parkers Mother, then took the stand and testified that when her son returned from his second deployment to Iraq he was different saying he was “very withdrawn.”
She indicated that both Parker’s wife and her attempted to get him help without any avail. She also testified that proper procedure was not followed by both Fort Riley and the Department of Defense, but because of this case procedure has changed. After Parker’s mothers testimony the defense rested its case and the court recessed and returned at 1 p.m. for closing statements. In closing statements the defense asked for the Jury to find Parker guilty of second degree murder where as the prosecution asked for the first degree murder charge. The Jury left to begin deliberation at 1:44 p.m. and after 53 minutes returned to the court room at 2:37 p.m. Judge David Stutzman read out the verdict. Parker was found guilty of one count of first degree murder and one count of criminal discharge of a firearm.
Sentencing has been scheduled for October 7th, in Riley County District Court.
