Party comes 6 months after restaurant explosion

(AP) — Former employees and customers of a Kansas City restaurant destroyed six months ago in a deadly blast will gather this weekend at the eatery’s old site.Screen Shot 2013-08-24 at 3.40.47 PM

Sunday’s party near the County Club Plaza entertainment area is expected to draw more than 1,000 people. The Feb. 19 blast that leveled JJ’s restaurant happened after a crew for a Kansas-based cable company subcontractor breached a natural gas supply line. One restaurant worker died, and at least 14 people were injured.

In recent years, the restaurant has celebrated its anniversary with a party that typically draws 400 to 500 people throughout the afternoon. But this time, JJ’s owners expect at least twice as many people. Bands will include former employees, and former customers will be barbecuing.
