On Friday, Roll Call reported that during the month of August only two Congressmen did more town hall meetings than Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01). Rep. Huelskamp conducted 14 town hall meetings all across the massive, 60,000 square mile, Big First District of Kansas (one of the largest congressional districts in the country, approximately the same size as the state of Illinois). Within hours after Rep. Huelskamp completed his 194th town hall meeting since taking office in 2011, Bloomberg BusinessWeek published an illustrated feature story entitled “Congress Now Steers Clear of the Voters; The End of the Town Hall” (see cartoons below).
Rep. Huelskamp made the following statement: “Visiting with Kansans at town halls is one of the best parts of the job. It’s a shame more of my colleagues don’t share my belief that we should use the August recess to listen to our constituents. I am grateful to the many Kansans who attended my most recent town halls. They deserve the opportunity to speak their minds, ask questions, and suggest solutions.”
Rep. Huelskamp added: “Virtually all of the participating citizens said they support defunding ObamaCare, oppose military intervention in Syria’s civil war, want Congress to repeal burdensome regulations, and demanded that Congress balance the budget.”
