Hornets Too Much for FHSU in Season Opener

Emporia State racked up 591 yards of total offense as they roll past the Fort Hays State Tigers 43-13 in the season opener for both Thursday night in front of 3,695 at Lewis Field. Hornet sophomore quarterback Brent Wilson completed 20-of-28 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns, all to Austin Willis and ran for two more scores.

After forcing the Tigers to a three-and-out on their first possession, the Hornets scored on a Wilson 32 yard run. Emporia State then scored 10 points in their final two possessions of the second quarter to go up 17-0 at the half.

Andreas Ashwood blocked a punt on the Hornets first possession of the third quarter, setting up an eight yard touchdown pass from Treveon Albert to Keaton Callins to pull the Tigers within 17-6. Callins also caught a 27-yard strike and finished with five catches for 52 yards.

Game Highlights

Albert completed 15-of-28 passes for 163 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Tigers were held to just 44 rushing yards. Andre Smith led the way with 23 yards on 10 carries. FHSU was just 2-for-10 on third down and lost the time of possession battle 39:32 to 20:28.
