Family of Kansas woman shot by police files lawsuit

(AP) — Relatives of a woman killed by Wichita police last summer are suing the city and two police officers.Court-gavel

Forty-five-year-old Karen L. Jackson died in July 2012 after she was shot near her estranged husband’s house. Police say Jackson was shot while walking toward the officers, stabbing herself with a knife and saying “shoot me.” Prosecutors say Jackson ignored warnings to drop the knife.

The lawsuit was filed Tuesday by Jackson’s estranged husband and her two adult children.

The family contends Jackson had disabilities that would have prevented her from threatening the officers. The lawsuit also says Jackson had bipolar disorder and city police were aware she was mentally ill.

City spokesman Van Williams said the city doesn’t comment on pending lawsuits.
