Fatal Fire Update: D.A. Wants to Prosecute Teen as Adult

Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder has announced that a formal complaint has been filed against 14-year-old Sam Vonachen and his office will seek Hutchinson fire now a murder investigationauthorization to prosecute him as an adult.

The 14-year-old was charged Friday with two counts of murder in the first degree relating to the deaths of his mother and younger sister. Each murder count is charged in the alternative under the theory that the killings were premeditated or occurred during the commission of an inherently dangerous felony. He’s also charged with the attempted murder in the first degree for his father and aggravated arson.

Schroeder says he anticipates that Vonachen could make an appearance at a detention hearing on Monday in Division IV, which is Juvenile Court. The hearing will probably be closed to the public under state law since he is charged as a juvenile offender. He is being held in the Reno County Youth Services Detention Facility.

This case involves the fire which was reported at 4 East 19th around 12:17 a-m, Thursday morning. When crews arrived, the two story home was fully involved including the front porch. Once they got the flames under control, they then began the search of the home and found the two victims in an upstairs bedroom. Neither was conscious at the time they were found. The girl died shortly after the fire and her mother died later Thursday.

Schroeder said a news release Thursday evening that investigators determined an accelerant was poured in several rooms on the first floor of the house and intentionally ignited.

The boy and his father were unharmed.
