Kansas health plan choices don’t look good

(AP) — A federal report says that Kansans who buy health coverage in a new online marketplace could have fewer choices for plans than residents of other states.Health 002

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says Kansas residents will be able to choose from among an average of 37 qualified health plans.

Kansas is among 36 states where the federal government has set up the health insurance exchange. The average number of plans for those states is 53.

The HHS report also provides estimates of premiums.

It says a Kansas family of four with a $50,000 income could pay an average of $619 a month for a benchmark policy known as the “second-lowest-cost silver plan.” But that could drop to $282 with federal subsidies.

Huelskamp reports latest Poll Results

Congressman Tim Huelskamp (R-Kansas) reported the poll results from the monthly telephone town hall his office conducted last week for constituents. During Tim Huelskampthese live telephone town hall events, Congressman Huelskamp invites the listeners to participate in an unscientific, bipartisan survey by answering several poll questions. Below are the results of the poll questions asked during the September 19, 2013 telephone town hall.

In last week’s telephone town hall poll, 89% of the respondents approved of Tim Huelskamp’s work as their Representative in Congress.
Last week’s poll also found that 74% of Big First respondents support shutting down the government for a few days to defund ObamaCare.

Also, 86% of Kansas respondents support work requirements for able-bodied adult food stamp recipients.
Congressman Huelskamp released this statement about the latest telephone town hall poll results:

“Kansans in the Big First District hired me to serve them in Congress, and it is my honor and privilege to do so. I’m encouraged to know my representation of their interests in Washington has not gone unnoticed. Additionally, it is clear that Kansans want Washington to embrace common sense reforms, like work requirements for able-bodied adult food stamp recipients. It also shows that Kansans want no part of Obamacare, and want it defunded even if Senator Reid and President Obama force a government shutdown.”

These bipartisan telephone town hall events are attended by constituents of all ideological and partisan persuasions, and all constituents on the call are invited to participate in the poll. If you reside in the First District of Kansas and have not received telephone calls inviting you to participate in Congressman Huelskamp’s monthly telephone town halls, please contact his Washington D.C. office at (202) 225-2715.

Governor’s aide rejects Dem comments about court

(AP) — Gov. Sam Brownback’s chief spokeswoman says the Kansas Senate’s top Democrat has no grounds to suggest the swearing-in of Brownback’s chief counsel Hawleyto the Court of Appeals is being delayed for political reasons.

Eileen Hawley said Tuesday the suggestion by Senate Minority Leader Anthony Hensley is unfounded.

Hensley questioned having Caleb Stegall take his seat on the Court of Appeals on Jan. 3. The Senate confirmed Stegall’s appointment September 4.

Hensley suggested the timing was designed to delay a statewide vote on keeping Stegall on the bench by two years, to November 2016.

But judicial branch officials say the timing is dictated by the budget. Brownback’s office pointed to a letter to that effect in August from Kansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Lawton Nuss.

The sheriff’s office says the burglar caused about $250 in damage to the building and made off with a small amount of cash.

The perpetrator also left behind a note of apology.

The crime remained unsolved Tuesday.

Suspects Charged in Ellis Co. Drug Bust

The four individuals arrested earlier this month as part of a drug bust in Hays and Ellis have been charged and given a preliminary hearing date.  Members of the Ellis County Drug Enforcement Unit, the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department, Ellis Police Department and Hays Police executed four search warrants at two residences in Hays and two in Ellis Thursday, September 5th. Officers seized over 2.5 pounds of Crystal Methamphetamine as well as paraphernalia and cash.

Nathaniel Ward, Rick McBee, Karen Knoll, and Rick Grecian were all arrested.  Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin told Hays Post that officers arrived at Grecian’s residence as a result of a warrant out of Trego County.

Immediately after the arrival of officers, Grecian was transporter to Hays Medical Center.  Harbin said the hospital stay was a result of a pre-existing medical condition and wasn’t related to the arrest.  Grecian was in the hospital for approximately 3 days before being transferred to Trego County.

Harbin added that HIPAA prevents him from disclosing any additional information about Grecian’s hospitalization; however he did state that the charges out of Ellis County were a result of what officers discovered when executing the warrant out of Trego County.

Ellis County Attorney Tom Drees told Hays Post that each suspect has been charged and has a preliminary hearing set. The charges from Ellis County and hearing dates as of Tuesday September 24th are as follows:

Kansas Lottery holding $1M unclaimed prize

(AP) — Kansas Lottery officials are urging residents to check their pockets, dashboards and bags to see who is holding a Powerball ticket worth $1 million.Lottery 001

Lottery spokeswoman Sally Lunsford says Tuesday that the ticket is valid only through Jan. 27, 2014, one year after it was sold.

Lunsford says it is unusual for the lottery to still be holding the winnings for such a large prize, though it frequently has several unclaimed $10,000 prizes that aren’t quickly claimed.

The winning Powerball ticket was sold somewhere in southwest Kansas. The winning numbers are 3-22-26-41-49 with the Powerball of 18. To win $1 million the ticket must match the first five numbers drawn but not the Powerball number.

Hays woman pleads guilty to fraud

A Hays woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $104,000 in government funds from Social Security and Medicaid, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.Earlyne C. Weigel

Earlyne C. Weigel, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of theft of government money.

In her plea, she admitted that in March 2003 she began receiving benefits from Social Security.  Her benefits were adjusted to take into account her household income, including income from her husband.

In 2005, she went to the Social Security field office in Hays, and falsely reported that she no longer lived with her husband.  As a result, from 2004 to 2010 she received more than $43,473 in Supplemental Security Income benefits to which she was not entitled.

In November 2008, investigators interviewed her husband, who told them that he and his wife had never lived apart while married.

Weigel also applied for and received Medicaid coverage beginning in 2004.  Her Medicaid coverage was contingent on her eligibility for Supplemental Security Income benefits.  From 2004 to 2010 she fraudulently received more than $60,919 in Medicaid benefits.

Sentencing is set for Dec. 9.

Weigel faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Free Workshop to Teach Children Life Saving Tips

child-fire-safetyThe Home Depot in Hays is hosting a free workshop aimed at teaching children and saving lives. October is Fire Prevention Month, and to help promote fire safety, Home Depot’s safety committee (called the in focus committee) is teaming up with multiple public service departments to education children.  The workshop, which is open to all age groups, is Saturday October 5th at 9am.

The Hays Fire Department, Police Department, EMTs, and the Highway Patrol will be on site giving demonstrations and letting kids experience fire safety in a supervised, hands-on environment. Susie Young, Co-captain of the committee, told Hays Post that the event is bigger than their regular workshops.

TODD HILEMAN with convincerSome of the things kids can look forward to this year include:

  • The Hays Fire Department’s Fire Safety House
  • The Highway Patrol on site
  • Helicopters (no rides)
  • EMTs giving demonstrations
  • Hays Police Department with ident-a-kid kits
  • Prizes

Young said that a similar event was held last year but didn’t get a good response.  Young said that this year she and Co-captain Lisa Fose plan to have a bigger turnout.

“The in focus committee, that’s our safety committee.  It changed hands right in the middle of everything and things didn’t get done until the last minute.  Lisa and myself, we just got put back on the in focus committee, and we decided to start out early. We started calling everybody and got a pretty good response from the public and from all the departments.  We’re hoping to have a pretty good crowd out here.”

Young said that the workshop will be set up towards the south side of the store.  The committee will have the area taped off to keep traffic out of the area.
