Visit to SW Kansas

The Kansas Democratic Party has been making strong efforts to engage Kansas Latino organizations and communities to better understand the issues we shareKansas Dems in common. To those ends we have recently hired Carlos Lugo to serve as our new Hispanic Outreach and Field Director.

Carlos has already begun meeting with and listening to local activists about how we should move forward. Just last weekend, the Kansas City Star highlighted Carlos’s recent efforts and outlined what Kansas Democrats are doing to prepare for 2014 and beyond.

And now Carlos is taking his show on the road.

All week long, Carlos will be touring southwest Kansas with Kerry Gooch, the KDP’s political director, to better understand the issues facing this fast growing region. And during their time on the road, Kerry and Carlos will be providing us with updates about where they’ve been and who they’ve met with this week. Check back in to see just what the KDP is doing to make sure all Kansans’ voices are heard.

Day 1: Dodge City

We couldn’t visit southwest Kansas without first visiting Boot Hill Cemetary. So that’s where we started our week long adventure.

Boot Hill

We took this photo in Dodge City on Tuesday at the Boot Hill museum. We stopped by the parlor in the museum and had a few “Sapsaparillas”. Sapsaparillas were the first form of root beer and can only be found now in a few places. The Boot Hill museum is built at the base of a old and very famous cemetery. Every year people travel all over the world to visit Dodge City and this museum which were made famous because of the long running tv show “Gun Smoke”.

Day 2: Liberal, Kansas

Our second day on the road started with a meeting with Kay Burtzloff, Executive Director of the Seward County United Way.

Kay Burtzloff

In addition to working as the Executive Director of the Seward County United Way, Kay also serves as the Secretary of the Seward County Democratic Party. Kay informed us of all the programs United Way works on in the community and made suggestions about what other local community leaders and activists we should contact during our trip or on subsequent return visits.

Kay also asked us to give her a quick Votebuider training. Even when we’re out of the office, we can’t get away from Votebuilder! Votebuilder has never been used in Seward County and Kay’ enthusiasm and excitment showed when she started learning about all the great tools Votebuilder can provide county party volunteers and staff.

Following this great meeting, we met up with Don Chewy, a strong advocate for southwest Kansas and a great guy. Don Chewy showed us around Liberal and introduced us to local small business owner Patricia Alfalo.

Don Chewy Patricia Alfalo

Patricia could not have been more accomodating and was kind enough to show us around her thrift store that provides clothes and other items for very low prices in Liberal, Kansas. Patricia’a store is an important part of the Hispanic community and serves a many local families. As a small business owner, Patricia is one of the growing number of Hispanic store owners in Liberal who try to provide goods and services for low and discounted rates because of the low wages many people in the community are paid.

Infant formula recall

(AP) — Johnson & Johnson is recalling 200,000 bottles of Motrin Infants formula due to the risk that they contain tiny plastic particles.Screen Shot 2013-09-07 at 6.24.36 AM

J&J’s McNeil unit said Friday that the recall affects three lots of its popular Motrin Drops Original Berry Flavor, which is used to lower fever and treat aches and pains in children 2 years old and younger. The company warned that the medicine may be contaminated with specs of PTFE, a plastic also used in Teflon coatings.

McNeil says it’s unclear if the recalled bottles actually contain the particles, which were found in a different product during the manufacturing process. The company decided to issue the recall because both products contain the same shipment of ibuprofen from a third-party supplier. Ibuprofen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer, also used in Advil.

“From our perspective, during the manufacturing process at the third party supplier, that’s when the particles got into the ibuprofen,” said McNeil Vice President Ed Kuffner, in an interview with the Associated Press. Kuffner declined to identify the company that made the ibuprofen.

The recalled bottles can be identified by lot numbers: DCB3T01, DDB4R01 and DDB4S01

McNeil is asking retailers to take the affected products off store shelves. Consumers should stop using the affected medicine and call the company for a refund at 1-877-414-7709.

The recalled Motrin was manufactured at the company’s plant in Beerse, Belgium. McNeil’s primary manufacturing plant in Fort Washington, Pa., has been closed since the spring of 2010 after a string of recalls involving brands like Tylenol, Motrin and Zyrtec. That included the recall of more than 136 million children and infant over-the-counter medicines in April 2010, the largest recall of its kind.

Friday’s announcement is the latest in about 40 product recalls announced by the New Brunswick, N.J.-based health care conglomerate since 2009.

In 2013 alone, J&J has recalled: millions of oral contraceptive due to flawed tablets, Adept hip implants that were failing and had to be replaced prematurely, OneTouch VerioIQ blood glucose meters that shut off rather than issuing a warning when blood sugar levels get dangerously high, Children’s Tylenol made in South Korea that contained too much acetaminophen and versions of K-Y Jelly personal lubricant that potentially never got required regulatory approval.

Phase 2, estimated to cost $42,269, will be fencing for the larger dogs 5 acres area, more seating, signage, and another water station.

Phase 3 will be primarily shelters and seating.

Mortinger says all the fencing will be six-foot high and made with industrial grade materials.

The bargains will be even bigger than what they were Friday, says Mortinger.

“We’re going to have a ‘sack sale’ to help clear everything out.”

FHSU Volleyball Come Up Short Against No. 5 BYU-Hawaii

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
Fort Hays State University dropped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-18, 25-23) contest with No. 5 BYU-Hawaii on Friday evening in Laie, Hawaii. The Tigers drop to 0-2 on the season while BYU now sits at 4-0.

Jenna Ulrich led the team with nine kills, while Taylor Mares followed up Thursday night’s strong performance with an eight kill evening.  Ulrich hit .350 while Mares’ percentage was .250.  Using a two-setter cycle, Kelsey Broadwell racked up 17 assists and Libby Ary had 14.

The Tigers’ defense was tested throughout the night from BYU’s strong attack, and Mackenzie Weinman stepped up the challenge, digging out 20 attacks to keep FHSU close.

In game one, FHSU trailed just once until the match was tied 9-9, but couldn’t pull away, eventually relinquishing the lead and needing to battle from behind.  The Tigers would hang tough throughout, pulling within one at 20-19, 21-20, 22-21 and 23-22, but couldn’t get over the hump and dropped the first set, 25-23.

BYU would hold the lead throughout game two, limiting the Tigers to a .128 hitting percentage (and five attack errors), to take the set, 25-18.

After the intermission, FHSU would answer back strongly, hitting .216 with a service ace and 12 kills as a team.  The teams would trade points until 7-7, when the Tigers rattled off a 5-1 run to lead, 12-8.  That lead, however, would shrink until BYU tied the game, 13-13.

FHSU wouldn’t falter, though, and once again attempted to pull away, but were unable to.  Down 15-17, BYU would run off four unanswered points to take the lead, 19-17.  The pesky Tigers, though, tied the match at 22 and 23, showing resilience until a two-point rally ended the match, 25-23.

FHSU travels to Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, Hawaii tomorrow to close out the Hawaii Invitational.  The Tigers will take on Lewis University at Noon HT (5 p.m. CT) and HPU at 6 p.m. HT (11 p.m. CT).

Facebook Threat Lands University Instructor in Jail UPDATE

Update: A Northwest Missouri State University Professor accused of an inappropriate Facebook post will not be charged with a crime for the post. He will be charged with drug offenses after a search of his house in Maryville turned up what prosecutor Bob Rice called a marijuana growing operation.

Nodaway County Prosecutor Bob Rice tells us the Facebook post, about going to the campus bell tower with a high powered rifle, was very likely a joke.

(click here for more on the post and the reaction on campus)

“Basically I have to show that a comment is made with a serious intent to threaten others,” Rice said in an interview.

“If I cannot show that mental state that it was made seriously and not just a joke, then I don’t have the proof beyond a reasonable doubt to proceed with that charge.”

Friday 10 p.m. As it turns out the investigation led them in another direction. Authorities searched the home of the instructor Friday morning.

“When we searched his house, again, we were looking for anything that would give us a peak into his mind to confirm whether or not he was being serious, or if he was, in fact, joking. When we executed the search warrant we found a growing operation of marijuana.”

According to a court affidavit, the search turned up approximately ten live plants underneath heated lights, and multiple bags of marijuana, including dried marijuana, and multiple bongs and smoking pipes.

Chief Clarence Green of the Northwest Missouri State University Police Department, said there was more than the statutory 35 grams of marijuana in the house, at 602 West 2nd Street in Maryville.

The evidence was sufficient for Rice to file two counts against Rouch, producing a controlled substance, a class-b felony, and possession of a controlled substance, a class-c felony.

Rouch faces arraignment on Tuesday. Bond has not yet been set in the case, and Rouch remains in custody.

On Thursday the university issued a statement saying it had suspended Rouch pending completion of an internal investigation.

No charges have been filed by Friday morning against a communications instructor at Northwest Missouri State who was jailed for a Facebook post.

Rouch, Matthew-Investigative Hold Terroristic Threats
Matthew Rouch -Investigative Hold Terroristic Threats

Matthew Rouch, 57,was arrested Thursday on a 24-hour investigative hold. Prosecuting Attorney Bob Rice has not yet filed any charges in the case, and has not returned telephone calls asking for comment.

The post: “…by October, I’ll be wanting to get up to the top of the bell tower with a high powered rifle – with a good scope, and probably a gatling gun as well.”

School officials and the Nodaway County Sheriff took the post seriously, as did an editorial in the student newspaper, The Northwest Missourian:

“We will not even acknowledge the possible joking tone that may have been lost in this post because, honestly, we don’t care,” wrote Editor-in-Chief Trey Williams.

“We are shocked that a University professor would willingly post something so incredibly unwise, and that it went under the radar. Granted the post was removed later that day after comments from other faculty were made.

“But that is not a joke you make, and we hope that’s all that it was. That is not something you say, no matter how frustrating your students may get. That’s not something you throw around at any point, on any forum, for any reason.”

School officials say they will now will wait for results of a law enforcement investigation before taking any other action. Rouch’s booking photograph appeared among a regular submission of all booking photos from the Nodaway County Jail.

The booking photograph was slugged with the charge, as are all such photographs. Rouch’es photograph was titled “Rouch-Matthew-Investigative-Hold-Terroristic-Threats.” No such charge had been filed by Friday morning.

Northwest emailed a message to all students, faculty, and staff Thursday saying it would not tolerate threats or violence and that the teacher had been removed from campus.

In an online poll of students, Rouch received relatively high marks. His overall quality rated a perfect 4.0. He also received a top score for “clarity.” Students gave him an average of 3.9 on “helpfulness,” and 3.0 on “easiness.”

Local Man Arrested for Worthless Checks

Richard Hubbard Jr.
Richard Hubbard Jr.

The Hays Police Department has made an arrest in connection with multiple crimes in Hays.

Lt. Brandon Wright of the Hays Police Department told Hays Post that 39-year-old Richard Eugene Hubbard Jr. has been arrested for six counts of theft by deception for giving worthless checks at a retailer in the 3300 block of Vine St.

Wright says that additional information gathered at the time of arrest warranted eight additional cases to be opened against Hubbard.

Wright was not able to discuss the nature of those additional cases as they are under investigation, but he did say that additional charges could be added at a later date.

Hays High Wins Opening Game Against Junction City

Hays High graduated a lot of talent and experience in May of 2013.  That didn’t change the expectations of the Indian’s football team….Win.  Hays High did just that 27-22 over Junction City on Friday night in Hays.

Neither team scored in the first half, even though Hays High drove into Junction City territory each of their first three drives.  Finally in the second quarter Hays it pay dirt.  Junior Alex Delton hit junior Adam Klaus with a 8 yard touchdown pass on third down to take a 7-0 lead.  Hays lead 14-0 at half time when Delton dove into the end zone from two yards out.

The second half started sloppy for both teams.  Each team fumbled their opening play, then Junction City scored their first points of the season on a 2 yard touchdown run cutting the lead to 14-7.  After a three and out the Blue Jays scored again but had the extra point blocked and Hays still led 14-13.

With 4:06 left in the third quarter, Hays gave up the lead when an errant snap sailed over the punters head for a safety.  Hays refused to back down however trailing 15-14..  Lane Clark blasted a kick-off from the 20 yard line for a touch back 80 yards away.  The next play Clayton Riedel intercepted his second pass of the night.

Following a Indian punt, Junction City turned the ball over on a fumble, one of five turnovers on the night.  The ensuing play Preston Weigel sprinted 24 yards for his first touchdown of the season.  Hays missed on a two point conversion attempt and held a 20-15 lead.

Junction City turned the ball over on downs and Hays retook a two touchdown lead on a six play drive all on the ground, capped off by a Ty Whittington 14 yard touchdown run.  Hays led 27-15 with 6:51 left to go in the fourth.

The Indians would allow one more touchdown before shutting down the Blue Jays and running out the clock for a 27-22 win.

Preston Weigel ran for 111 yards and one touchdown down on 19 carries.  Ty Whittington scored a touchdown and ran for 86 yards on just 10 touches.

Hays is 1-0 and will play McPherson at home next week.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Drops Season Opener

https://www.horizonappliance.com/
The Fort Hays State women’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Southwest Minnesota State on Friday evening in the season opener at FHSU Soccer Stadium in Hays. A goal in the 75th minute was the difference in a match that saw the Tigers take 11 shots to just four for the Mustangs.

Fort Hays State dominated the first half offensively with the wind at its back, taking 10 shots to just one for SMSU. The FHSU defense held SMSU to just three shots in the second half even with the reversal of wind, but a low shot to the right corner Kendahl Fisher of SMSU got past a diving Nicole Barnaba into the net.

Brienna Dehkes picked up the win for SMSU in goal, saving eight shots in the first half, two in a row on a great opportunity the Tigers had on a shot by Jordon Hester and a rebound attempt by Sabrina Van Horn in the 27th minute. Barnaba took the loss and had just one save in the match.

Fort Hays State looks to rebound from the loss on Sunday when it hosts University of Sioux Falls at 11 am at FHSU Soccer Stadium.
