Kansas voter citizenship amendment rejected

(AP) — Kansas legislators ended a special session without debating proposed changes in a law requiring new voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when they state-capitolregister.

Democratic Sen. Oletha Faust-Goudeau tried Wednesday to add language to a bill on criminal sentencing that would have let new voters sign a sworn statement attesting that they’re U.S. citizens.

The Republican-controlled Senate ruled the proposal out of order.

Another Wichita Democrat, House member Jim Ward, had the same result with a similar amendment Tuesday in his chamber.

The registration law took effect in January and is designed to prevent non-citizens from voting. But the registrations of more than 15,000 legal Kansas residents are on hold because they have yet to provide proper documentation of citizenship, such as a passport or birth certificate.

Senate action Wednesday means that Shane Bangerter of Dodge City, Helen Van Etten of Topeka and Ann Murguia of Kansas City, Kan., can continue serving as regents overseeing the higher education system.

The votes were 35-5 for Bangerter and 37-3 for Van Etten and Murguia.

Brownback named them as regents in June, and a Senate committee gave them permission to start serving on the board. Had senators rejected their appointments, they’d have had to step down.

The Senate also confirmed Secretary of Administration Jim Clark and Securities Commissioner Josh Ney.

The votes were 40-0 for Clark and 37-2 for Ney.

A Wyandotte County judge on Wednesday bound 50-year-old Darrell Lee Broxton over for trial on charges of first-degree murder, theft and auto burglary.

Broxton, of Kansas City, Mo., is accused in the December 2012 death of 69-year-old Peter Belmont Jr. in the older man’s Kansas City, Kan., home. A doctor testified during the preliminary hearing that Belmont had been attacked with a sharp implement, such as a hatchet.

Belmont raised Afghan hounds and was internationally known on the dog show circuit as a judge and handler. He had also taught art in the city’s public schools for many years before retiring.

Governor on conclusion of the Special Legislative Session

Kansas Governor Sam Brownback issued the following statement following today’s conclusion of the Special Legislative Session:Sam_Brownback_official_portrait1

“I congratulate the legislature, and especially House Speaker Ray Merrick and Senate President Susan Wagle, on thoughtfully addressing the issue of public safety and repairing Kansas’s “Hard 50” sentence.

The Legislature acted quickly, with resolve and narrow focus, to protect the safety of all Kansans and I appreciate their service. The broad bipartisan support for the “Hard 50” sentencing guidelines can be seen in the unanimous votes in both the House and Senate.

Kansas legislators demonstrated their commitment to all Kansans with their quick and decisive actions.

Several appointments were confirmed during this Special Session, including Jim Clark as Secretary of Administration, Josh Ney as Securities Commissioner and Caleb Stegall to the Court of Appeals. A total of 19 Kansans were approved to serve on boards and commissions. I appreciate the diligence of the review committees and Senate in confirming them, and I thank these Kansans for their willingness to serve their fellow citizens.

I join my fellow Kansans in thanking the Legislature for its commitment and service, and especially for the collaboration shown throughout this special session.”

Senator Roberts on Military Action in Syria

Following the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations’ consideration of a resolution authorizing use of military force in Syria, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts todayRoberts reaffirmed his opposition to military strikes in the Syrian conflict.

“I appreciate the deliberation of this important resolution in the Senate, but unfortunately, the resolution does not address my concerns about the goals of such an attack nor the details of our nation’s involvement, today and in the future,” Roberts said.

“While I recognize the horror of citizens and their children being murdered by their own government, whether by poison gas or bombs and bullets, it is clear we have no meaningful collation of allies –not the UN, the Arab League or even the British — nor detailed plan of action, nor clear picture of our objective.

“The President insists he has the authority to conduct a very limited military strike – a shot across the bow of the Assad regime – not war or even action to affect a regime change.

“Obviously Syrian President Bashar Assad will think this action will mean war. With this delay, Assad is simply moving his WMD weaponry and assets and will doubtlessly continue his murderous attacks on his own people. What does the Obama Administration do then?

“More important, do we have contingency plans for terrorist attacks against U.S. targets in the Mideast or even within the United States? Let us not forget the loss of more than 200 Marines in Beirut or the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole following similar attacks. History tells us murderous dictators have never been deterred by slaps on the wrist.

“This proposed action is both dangerous and inept and, as defined by the President – instead of sending a strong message to Assad, North Korea, Iran and Russia – will be regarded as little more than a slap on the wrist.

“In all probability, the administration will accomplish nothing except a feckless effort to respond to the President’s red line warning. Now, in delaying the attack, he simply wants the Congress to provide cover. How many times have we seen these attempts to involve our military in limited political wars of gradualism where victory is not clearly defined? Our nation should never engage without a clear objective, a plan of alternative action and a clear exit strategy. The Senate resolution does not clarify or meet these requirements.”

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee favorably reported the resolution with a vote of 10-7 with one present.

Kansas man loses more than $1,000 in work scam

(AP) — A 33-year-old Salina man is out more than $1,000 in a work scam but his loss could have been much worse.

Thescam-alert man answered an online ad for a position with Shell Global and was later told he got the job but would have to send $900 for a work permit.

The man sent the money through Moneygram, which charged him a $61 fee. He then was notified that he would need housing and told to wire $1,800 for the housing option he picked.

The man paid a $93 fee to send the money before calling Shell Global and being told the offer was a scam. He stopped the transfer of the $1,800 and got that back, but still had to pay the fee.

Huelskamp: Employment over Welfare Dependency

Today, Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) praised Governor Sam Brownback and Kansas Department for Children & Families Secretary Phyllis Gilmore for their huelskampdecision to allow a federal waiver of the “work requirement for food stamps” to expire on September 30th.

Rep. Huelskamp made the following statement:

“Adults who aren’t disabled and have no dependents should not get food stamps unless they’re working, looking for work, being trained for work, or performing volunteer work. I applaud Governor Brownback and Secretary Gilmore for refusing to accept President Obama’s waiver of the federal work requirements and promoting employment over welfare dependency.”

Huelskamp continued: “In Congress, I’ve led the effort to enact and enforce similar workfare requirements in all 50 states. I introduced both the bill and the Farm Bill amendment that would implement common sense work requirements. As a nation, we must rein in out-of-control spending. Implementing these reforms will help get us back on track to reducing our deficits and promote paychecks over welfare checks.”

GOP Response to the Kansas Democratic Party’s Rant Against Tim Huelskamp

The views and opinions expressed in this post are solely those of the author. These views and opinions do not represent those of the Post News Network and/or any/all contributors to this site.

We were surprised that the Hays Post would print the emotional tirade by the Kansas Democratic Party, devoid of facts, but full of derogatory conclusions seeking to name “worst Kansas politician.”
For starters, as even a casual observer would understand, the worst politician is the one who loses the election. To argue otherwise is merely whining about the voters’ choice. Given that the Kansas Democrats are 0-6 for federal elections and 0-6 for state wide office, rejected by the people, they are not faring too well, thus the bitterness.
So let’s review facts.
They accuse Governor Brownback of using a law that gives “him unilateral power to appoint judges.” Really? The law states the Governor nominates, the Senate confirms. No one has unilateral appointment power.
As to the cronyism charge leveled at Caleb Stegall – no less that Stephen Six, former democrat attorney general, described him as a “deep thinker, a scholar of the Screen Shot 2013-09-04 at 4.12.34 PMlaw,’ ‘highly principled, ethical,’ ‘always prepared and diligent’ and someone who ‘would make a terrific addition’ to the court”.
Next they accuse Secretary of State Kris Kobach of starting “another wasteful lawsuit” – but Kansas is merely following the course of action specified by the U.S. Supreme Court to enforce state law. The legislature overwhelmingly passed the law, Secretary Kobach and Attorney General Schmidt are just enforcing it.
Last, the Democrats reserve special hatred for Tim Huelskamp, the District’s Congressman, personally attacking his character. But they characteristically provide no facts to back up their baseless claims.
As to Obamacare- a program that has cost American jobs, has forced many workers to be reduced from full-time to part-time, has increased health insurance costs and will massively increase Washington’s already huge debt; a program that not even the 86,000 HHS employees can explain; a program that gives an abusive IRS power to enforce; and a program where Obama has already missed more than half of his own 82 timelines — who would not advise people to seek other better options?
As Congressman Huelskamp has made clear: until President Obama himself, and his family, and his entire White House, and every member of Congress, and every other federal employee is required to participate in ObamaCare, no other American should be forced to either.
But let’s see what the people of the First District think- according to the official records Tim Huelskamp won all 211,337 votes cast in the 2012 election. That’s 100.0 % of the vote. That’s a winner.

Defendant Sentenced For Sex Crime Committed at Larned State Hospital

A Kansas man who pleaded guilty to an Internet sex crime that took place while he was in the Kansas Sexual Predator Treatment Program at Larned State Hospital has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said today.
Brull
Mark D. Brull, 39, Larned State Hospital, pleaded guilty to one count of transferring obscene material to a child. In his plea, he admitted that while he resided at Larned State Hospital he became friends with co-defendant Ryan J. Dancosse, a resident of Wichita.  Brull provided Dancosse with the passwords to Brull’s social networking profiles including Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube, as well as his email account.  With Brull’s knowledge and agreement, Dancosse found and copied images of pornography and then uploaded the images to Brull’s accounts for others to see and discuss.

In April 2011, Brull and Dancosse began communicating with a 14-year-old boy living in Massachusetts. In April and May 2011 Brull communicated with the boy via email and telephone.  Brull guided the boy to his social networking profiles on the Internet, where he knew Dancosse had uploaded pornography.  The boy was able to view the images on his computer and then discuss them with Brull.  The images included depictions of nude males performing sexual acts.

Co-defendant Ryan J. Dancosse, 40, Wichita, Kan., pleaded guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. He is set for sentencing Oct. 2.

Grissom commended the Kansas Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, the Wichita Police Department and the Sudbury, Mass., Police Department , U.S. Attorney Jason Hart and Attorney General Steve Karrer of Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office.
