The Tigers defeated University of Saint Mary by 18 points to win.

Fort Hays State posted a score of 66, getting team-point placings of 5, 6, 15, 18 and 22. Mills led the way for FHSU in fifth overall, with a time of 26:36 on the 8K course. The Tiger women finished second out of 16 teams. Hannah Robinson paced the Tigers by finishing 11th overall in a field of 154 runners. Fort Hays State finished just eight points behind team champion Baker University.

The Tigers packed together to stay near the top of the team standings. Even though FHSU did not have a top 10 finisher overall, Fort Hays State had four runners finish together in the 14th through 17th overall positions. A pair of runners were all that separated Robinson from the rest of her top five scoring teammates.

Robinson covered the 5K course in a time of 20:05, almost a minute off the winning pace of 19:08 by Lauren Jaqua from Baker University. Micki Krzesinski was the next Tiger to finish in 20:12. Kylie Gaughan was the third FHSU runner to cross the line, two seconds back in 20:14, while Marie Schaller and Ramsey McCarter were staggered just one second each behind that in 20:15 and 20:16 respectively.

Both teams take a week off before getting set to host their home meet, the FHSU Open, held at Sand Plum Nature Trail just outside of Victoria, Kan., about 10 miles east of Hays. The FHSU Open is slated for October 12.

FHSU Women’s Soccer Ties MSSU in Lightning Shortened Match

https://www.horizonappliance.com/

Fort Hays State University drew a 1-1 tie with Missouri Southern on Friday night, as the match was called in double overtime due to weather.

FHSU (3-5-1, 0-2-1 MIAA) led 1-0 at half, but MSSU (2-3-2, 1-0-2 MIAA) would tie it in the second frame and force overtime.

The game was put in weather delay at 100:51, and called after lighting continued to strike in the area.

Hannay Jurgens had the Tigers’ lone goal, while Jordan Hester, who took three shots, had an assist. Amanda Talbott and Hailey Davey added two shots, while six others, including Jurgens, had one shot.

Nicole Barnaba played the entire game at goalkeeper for FHSU and had one save.

The Tigers had six shots (two on goal) in the first half, and broke the stalemate in the 45th minute.  Hester crossed a ball into the box from the right side, and Jurgens’ header found the net.  It was Jurgens’ first goal of the season, and Hester’s first assist.

In the 55th minute, FHSU’s Davey found the net, but was called offsides on the play, negating the score.

MSSU tied the game at 76:13, when a cross from Karley Thomas found Katelyn Roberson, who scored.

With the game appeared heading for overtime, FHSU would escape a near-goal for MSSU when Dani Harris stepped in front of an open net shot by Roberson, stopping the game-ending threat.

During the first extra period, FHSU had another near-miss on a game winner. Margaret Meier retrieved a ball from the top of the box after MSSU’s Beth Hammons dived after a pass, and fired on an open net, hitting the cross bar.

The Tigers travel to Wichita, Kan., on Sunday for a Newman on Sunday for a 2 p.m. matchup.

Kansas man charged with murder over 2012 shooting

(AP) — A 40-year-old Topeka man has been charged with first-degree murder over the January 2012 shooting of a local developer described as a friend and businesscourt partner.

Monroe E. Lockhart also faces a felony arson charge in a complaint filed Friday in Shawnee County District Court by District Attorney Chad Taylor.

Lockhart already is in custody after being convicted earlier this year of multiple charges for a November 2011 home invasion and the burning of a woman with a heated knife blade.

The new case involves the death of Corey Michael Brown. Family members previously told The Topeka Capital-Journal the two were good friends and partners. Authorities provided few details about the crime.

Taylor said the arson charge alleges Lockhart destroyed his car to get insurance money.

Fatal Fire Update: D.A. Wants to Prosecute Teen as Adult

Reno County District Attorney Keith Schroeder has announced that a formal complaint has been filed against 14-year-old Sam Vonachen and his office will seek Hutchinson fire now a murder investigationauthorization to prosecute him as an adult.

The 14-year-old was charged Friday with two counts of murder in the first degree relating to the deaths of his mother and younger sister. Each murder count is charged in the alternative under the theory that the killings were premeditated or occurred during the commission of an inherently dangerous felony. He’s also charged with the attempted murder in the first degree for his father and aggravated arson.

Schroeder says he anticipates that Vonachen could make an appearance at a detention hearing on Monday in Division IV, which is Juvenile Court. The hearing will probably be closed to the public under state law since he is charged as a juvenile offender. He is being held in the Reno County Youth Services Detention Facility.

This case involves the fire which was reported at 4 East 19th around 12:17 a-m, Thursday morning. When crews arrived, the two story home was fully involved including the front porch. Once they got the flames under control, they then began the search of the home and found the two victims in an upstairs bedroom. Neither was conscious at the time they were found. The girl died shortly after the fire and her mother died later Thursday.

Schroeder said a news release Thursday evening that investigators determined an accelerant was poured in several rooms on the first floor of the house and intentionally ignited.

The boy and his father were unharmed.

City gets Request for Additional Parade

hays logo

The Hays City Commission received a request for an additional city-wide parade.  At Thursday’s meeting, the commission was presented with a request for a permit to hold a Halloween parade.  The request was for a parade to be held Friday, November 1st at 7:00 pm.

The request was made by Myrietta Leach and Tammey Walker, both employed by Re/Max Pro who would be sponsoring the event.

The parade would give children an opportunity to wear their costumes more than one night a year.  Leach and Walker pointed out that a costume/Halloween parade is an event that many smaller towns have.  They added that while there are some organizations that offer in-house events, it would be an opportunity for parents not affiliated or familiar with all the groups in Hays to celebrate the holiday with their children.

Commissioners heard from Hays Police Chief Don Scheibler, who said that he was in favor of the event but had concerns about the short time frame to get a parade together for this year.  The Commission echoed those concerns, citing the work that goes into organizing the existing community parades.

While they voiced unanimous support for the idea (though there were concerns about some of the details such as the parade start time and day of the week), the Commission asked that the proposal be brought back to them next year a few months in advance to allow for adequate planning and collaboration.

Mayor Kent Steward added that this would be the first city parade to be sponsored by an individual company rather than the community, and this would be part of the discussion if the proposal is brought before the Commission next year.

Regents: Enrollment down but not at FHSU

-(AP) — The Kansas Board of Regents is reporting a system-wide drop in fall enrollment.fort_hays_state_university_ihe_medium

The report suggests eliminating the CAH designation for any hospital participating in the CAH program in accordance with state “necessary provider” designations, and fails to recognize the unique circumstances of delivering health care in rural America. Seventy-two of Kansas’ 83 CAHs could be impacted if Congress passes legislation implementing the report’s recommendations.
