Hays Alzheimer’s Walk

Walk to End AlzheimersThe annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s is set for this weekend in Hays at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The 11th annual event is Saturday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. and it is designed to help increase awareness and raise research funds.

According to the Alzheimer’s Association, Alzheimer’s is the 6th leading cause of death in the United States and more than 5.4 million Americans and 53,000 Kansas are living with the disease.

Josh Clinkscales is this year’s Hays Walk Chair and he said individuals can register at the event, with registration beginning at 10:30 a.m.or people can register before hand at alz.org/walk.

Clinkscales said the first few ceremonial laps will be inside the coliseum and then participants can move outside it they want. He also said that after the walk is over there will be door prizes to give away and there will be speakers that will say a few words after the walk.

Jan Evans is the Outreach Coordinator for the Central and Western Kansas Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and she said they are excited to see people joining the cause.

“When people fight for this cause and they become part of it, they know that they are paying back what this dreaded disease has done for a loved one of theirs.”

As of Wednesday they have 12 teams and 38 walkers signed up for Saturday’s event and they have raised over $3,400.
