A group of FHSU Students are holding a Chili Cookoff to benefit a community project.
Fort Hays State University’s Meetings, Conventions and Event Management class will host a chili contest on Saturday November 9th from 5 to 8 p.m. at the National Guard Armory, 200 Main, Hays. Proceeds from the event will be given to Friends of the Hays Dog Park.
Valeria Manriquez, Liberal junior, is in charge of the event. Manriquez is challenging community members to “unleash your favorite chili recipe” to support the Friends of the Hays Dog Park.
Manriquez told Hays Post that the event is dual purpose: it gives herself and other students an opportunity to become familiar with large-scale event planning, and it’s an opportunity to give back to the community. In this case, funds will go towards completion of the Hays Dog Park.
Competitors may compete individually or in teams up to five people. The top three teams will receive a prize.
Teams must make chili in a four- to six-quart crockpot and each team must provide their own cooking ware.
Chili tasters will be given an opportunity to taste all entrants in order to vote for their favorite and choose a winner.
Prizes will be announced at the event.
To compete in the contest, entrants can pick up a registration form at the Visitor’s Center on 27th and Vine and on the Facebook page, Unleash your best Chili Recipe.
Registration is $10. Admission prices for chili tasters are $5 for adults and $3 for children and students. Hot dogs and cinnamon rolls (donated by Hampton Inn) are $1 each at the event. Drinks will also be provided.
