
In accordance with Executive Order 10-12, Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has ordered flags to be flown at half-staff from sun-up to sun-down on Wednesday, October 23, in honor of Sergeant Patrick Hawkins. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, October 23, at Arlington National Cemetery.
Hawkins enlisted in the Army after graduating from high school in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Hawkins went on to become an Army Ranger. He is survived by his wife Brittanie of Lansing, Kansas and his parents Roy and Shelia of Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Sergeant Hawkins was killed on October 6, 2013 while on patrol in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. Hawkins was assigned to B Company, 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Georgia.
According to a press release from Fort Benning, Hawkins was killed while moving to the aid of a wounded Ranger. The release states that this was the fourth deployment to Afghanistan for Hawkins, who had just turned 25.
Hawkins was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and Purple Heart.
