Authorities Investigating Race Car Damage (VIDEO)

The Ellis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a costly case of criminal damage to personal property.

The incident happened on Saturday, October 12th late in the evening at RPM Speedway in Hays.  Sheriff Ed Harbin told Hays Post that the car, IMCA Modified Racecar number B21, received extensive damage while sitting on a trailer in the northeast parking area of the track.  The owner of the car, Chadd Brown of Great Bend, had loaded the car onto a trailer.  The damage to the car wasn’t discovered until he had already made the trip home, at which point he alerted authorities.

According to a person close to the Brown family, the damage is estimated to cost around $8900 to repair and appears to have been caused by a thin, solid object such as the torsion bar from a car.

Brown’s car was the only one damaged in the pits that evening.  Harbin said that he has been working with authorities in Great Bend to ensure the police report is accurate and detailed.  As of today, he said there are two suspects (up from one suspect initially), and he’s unsure how long it will take before an arrest is made.

“It just depends on which way the interviews go. You know, sometimes you’ve got to dig for every piece of information you get.  Sometimes they’re cooperative, sometimes they’re not.  So it just depends on how cooperative they’re going to be during the investigation.”

This isn’t the first time Brown’s car has been the center of attention at RPM Speedway.  On September 21st, the same car was involved in an accident that led to one driver throwing punches and being restrained by track officials.  A video of that incident can be found below.

Friends and family of Brown have donated money to be used as a reward for information leading to the arrest of the guilty party. At this time, the reward is for $1000.

The Sheriff’s Department added that the investigation is ongoing, and they aren’t able to comment about either of the two suspects, but they have been following all leads and tips, and they welcome any additional information pertinent to the case.
