Wrong way I-70 driver hospitalized – UPDATE

Ellis county SheriffUpdate: The Ellis County Sheriff’s Department has provided an update in the case of a car stopped after driving the wrong direction in I-70 early Monday.

According to Sheriff Ed Harbin, authorities were alerted that a vehicle was traveling  westbound in the eastbound lanes.  An officer stopped the vehicle at mile marker 154.

The officer determined that the driver, 61 year old Steven Brungardt of Victoria, was very confused and required medical attention.

Brungardt was transported to Hays Medical Center via Ellis County EMS, where he later died.

Harbin couldn’t provide specifics on Brungardt’s medical condition or cause death.

 

Original Story: Law enforcement authorities responded early Monday morning to report of a wrong way driver on I-70 at mile post 155, just west of Hays.

The driver was safely stopped. However, due to health reasons, the driver was unable to follow the officer off the interstate.  Ellis County EMS was called just after 6 a.m.  They transported the driver and an officer to Hays Medical Center.

The law enforcement officer had to leave the his vehicle and the wrong way driver’s car in the median.
