Brownback rues rush on holiday shopping

brownback.jpg(AP) — Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback says he understands why some retailers are holding Black Friday shopping hours on Thursday, but he doesn’t like it.

The governor said on Wednesday he’d prefer that everyone observe Thanksgiving as a holiday. When stores open for shopping on Thursday, Brownback says, it takes workers away from their families.

The shopping season is especially short this year because Thanksgiving is occurring on Nov. 28 — one of the latest dates it can be observed.

Meanwhile, Brownback issued a proclamation designating Nov. 30 as “Small Business Saturday” in Kansas. The national “Small Business Saturday” campaign urges consumers to shop at businesses in their communities during what’s usually the busiest shopping weekend of the year.

Kan. AG issues opinion on guns at polling places

Attorney General Derek Schmidt (AP) — Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt is offering guidance on how the state’s concealed carry law applies to buildings used as polling places on election days.

In an opinion issued Wednesday, Schmidt says voters with permits to carry concealed firearms must comply with regulations that applied to the specific location before an election. That means if voters are allowed to have a concealed weapon in a building before the election they will be allowed to carry concealed guns when voting.

Secretary of State Kris Kobach requested the opinion, to clarify any ambiguity over how the law applied in non-governmental buildings during elections. Such buildings include property leased temporarily as polling places.

Attorney general opinions aren’t considered law but can be used as guidance until an issue is tested.

The night before Thanksgiving (VIDEO)

ecma logo colorIf  Kyle Ermoian had his way, there would be more songs about Thanksgiving.

The pastor of Celebration Community Church and member of the Ellis County Ministerial Alliance is looking forward to Thursday’s annual Community Thanksgiving Feast.

ECMA took over the tradition in 2007 and it’s been held in the National Guard Armory in downtown Hays.

Tomorrow’s dinner, which begins at noon, will be at the old Fanchon Ballroom.

The building has been purchased by Pam Burgardt of Rose Garden Steak House & Catering, and is now called the Rose Garden Banquet Hall.

“Now Pam won’t have to deliver the food,” says Ermoian.  “It’s all in one location now.”

The former Pam’s Bakery Shop and Catering was located at 230 East Eighth Street in downtown Hays.

THANKSGIVING 1 11-27-13
Food donations from shoppers at Vine Street Dillons

People attending the free dinner will also get a bag of groceries to take home.

Celebration Community Church volunteers Megan Stanley and Keith Heron were collecting food donations from shoppers Saturday at the Vine Street Dillons:

Wednesday night, about a hundred volunteers will sack the donated groceries and “deck the hall” for Thursday’s dinner.

Ermoian says the dinner costs about $4,000 and tax deductible donations are always welcome.  The event is coordinated by First Call for Help; the ACCESS van will provide transportation.

Police report details fatal shooting

Police Lights(AP) — Topeka police have released a report on the fatal shooting of two Topeka police officers killed last year during an armed standoff with a 22-year-old man.

The nine-page report released Tuesday includes a detailed timeline of the events leading up to the December 2012 fatal shootings of Cpl. David Gogian and officer Jeff Atherly. David Tiscareno was killed about 12 hours after he shot Gogian and Atherly as they investigated reported drug activity at a central Topeka grocery store.

While the report contains some new details, much of the information had been previously released.

The report is available on the front page of the department’s website until Dec. 3.

Huelskamp: ObamaCare Vs. Religious Liberty Round 2

Congressman Tim Huelskamp
Congressman Tim Huelskamp

The United States Supreme Court announced Tuesday it will review the HHS Mandate provisions within ObamaCare. Oral arguments are expected to take place in March 2014 with a ruling by late June.  Congressman Tim Huelskamp (KS-01) made the following statement:

“Nearly 17 months ago, I stood on the U.S. House floor and warned the Supreme Court that they would see a flood of lawsuits protesting the attacks on religious liberties by ObamaCare. Well that day has come. Today there are more than 80 lawsuits battling this egregious infringement of the First Amendment. It is my hope that the Supreme Court follows the Constitution and protects our God-given right of conscience. It is the very foundation of our nation — it is why so many fought and died for Liberty.”

Representative Huelskamp has remained a visible and vocal opponent to the religious restrictions imposed by the Affordable Care Act. He is an active member of the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus. Congressman Huelskamp has shown support to several of the organizations involved in the lawsuits.

KHAZ Country Music News: Carrie Underwood in “Sound of Music” Live

khaz carrie underwood 20130917NEW YORK (AP) – Carrie Underwood says her experience as an “American Idol” winner will be a big help to her when she tackles a role in a live TV production of the “Sound of Music.” It’s her first major acting role – but she says being on Idol has made her comfortable with performing live on TV. She says at least with the musical, “there’s no chance of me being voted out.” Underwood made sure that she would be around for the show – she showed up two weeks before the six-week rehearsal period began – with all of her lines memorized. Co-producer Neil Meron says Underwood “is one of the bravest artists” he’s worked with. Underwood says she feels like she’s learning something every day in rehearsals. The show airs December 5.
