OSHA wants safety reports made public

Screen Shot 2013-11-07 at 5.49.58 AM(AP) — The Labor Department wants companies to begin filing all workplace injury and illness reports electronically so they are available for anyone in the public to see.

A person familiar with the proposal says the department’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration will announce the plan on Thursday as part of a proposed rule that would dramatically change the way companies file safety records. The person was not authorized to publicly disclose the information and requested anonymity.

OSHA says a new electronic reporting system would help the government, workers, researchers and the public more effectively prevent workplace accidents and illnesses. The plan is expected to please labor and workplace safety groups, but business groups are likely to oppose it.

Throughout the day, those in attendance will be able to learn about various sects of FHSU culture.  Various groups (such as Greek Life, FHSU athletics and student organizations/clubs) will have representatives available to meet with visitors and their accompanying family members.

Director of Admissions Tricia Cline told Hays Post that last year there were around 400 students.  Cline said that based on the RSVPs she’s received she expects around 350 – 375 students at this year’s Tiger Day.  She added that any students who didn’t RSVP and want to attend don’t have to be left out.

“Show up.  I left our RSVP out on our website so they can definitely RSVP, but really at this point on we are just telling students, go ahead and show up at 8:15 in the union and we will register you there.”

Cline said that the event attracts families from Kansas, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Missouri and Texas regularly. She added that this event is very popular because has so much more to offer than a regular university tour.

“I think probably one of the best things about Tiger Day is you get to visit with all kinds of academic departments all at once, but most of all you get to meet other prospective students who are looking at the same academic areas as you and other people who are looking at Fort Hays.  So you get to meet your new friends right away.”

Sen. Moran asks FCC to Support Investment in Rural Telecom (VIDEO)

U.S. Senator Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government (FSGG), along with a bipartisan group of senators called on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to do more to encourage rural telecommunications companies to upgrade telecommunications services in Kansas and across the country.

The bipartisan coalition of senators called on the FCC to make changes to its 2011 Universal Service Fund (USF) reform to increase accessibility for consumers in rural areas. USF supports new investments by telecom carriers in hard-to-reach areas, but the recent reforms left the amount of support that telecom companies receive too unpredictable, discouraging some carriers from making needed investments in rural parts of the country.

Moran and 25 senators asked new FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler to improve predictability of the USF, which would allow telecom carriers to more confidently invest in affordable broadband across rural Kansas.

“We remain concerned the reform order is limiting the ability of small carriers to provide rural consumers with the broadband service they need to compete in today’s global economy,” Sen. Moran and the senators wrote. “We urge the Commission to take immediate steps to re-establish predictability, sufficiency and transparency in the USF program so that these small businesses can resume critical investments in rural broadband.”

The bipartisan letter was cosigned by John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Mark Udall (D-Colo.), Kelly Ayotte (R-N.H.), Max Baucus (D-Mont.), Mark Begich (D-Alaska), Michael Bennet (D-Colo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Bob Casey (D-Penn.), Saxby Chambliss (R-Ga.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), Michael Enzi (R-Nev.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), James Inhofe (R-Okla.), Tim Johnson (D-S.D.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Senators Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), James Risch (R-Idaho), Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.).

Kansas Restaurant Owners Charged With Harboring Illegal Immigrants

Department of Justice(AP))The owners of a restaurant in Olathe have been charged in a federal criminal complaint with harboring undocumented workers in the US illegally.

US Attorney Barry Grissom says the complaint accuses the owners of Wei’s Super Buffet with knowingly employing, transporting and housing undocumented workers.

Defendants were charged with conspiracy to transport undocumented workers; conceal, harbor and shield undocumented workers; and encourage or induce those workers to unlawfully enter or remain in the United States.

Wei Liu, 40, Olathe, Kan., owner of Wei’s Super Buffet at 12225 Strang Line Road in Olathe and Wei’s Super Buffet at 7531 Wornall Road in Kansas City, Mo.
Xiang Liu, 35, Olathe, Kan., Wei Liu’s wife and restaurant manager.
Jin Hui Liu, 47, Olathe, Kan., Wei Liu’s brother in law.
Huiqing Liu, 44, Olathe, Kan., Wei Liu’s sister.
Quan Liu, 25, Kansas City, Mo., manager of the Wei’s Super Buffet in Kansas City, Mo.
Bin Liu, 39, Olathe, Kan.

An investigator’s affidavit filed in support of the complaint alleges that beginning in February 2011 agents of Homeland Security Investigations began surveillance on the owners, managers and employees at Wei’s Super Buffet. They checked Quarterly Wage Report and Unemployment Tax Returns submitted by the restaurant to the Kansas Department of Labor and they identified employees who were illegally present in the United States. They also identified apartments rented by the defendants where undocumented workers were living.

On Nov. 5, 2013, investigators served search and seizure warrants. During a search of Wei and Xiang Liu’s residence, where Biu Liu also resided, they found boxes of records associated with the daily operations of the restaurant and ledgers identifying the restaurant’s revenue. During the search of Jin Hui and Huiqing Liu’s residence, they found six undocumented workers residing the basement, all of whom worked at the restaurant. During the search of an apartment leased by Quan Liu near the restaurant in Kansas City, Mo., they found six undocumented workers residing there.

If convicted, the defendants face a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison and a fine up to $250,000.

Senator Roberts Renews Call For Sec. Sebelius to Resign (VIDEO)

Roberts At a hearing of the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance, U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) today confronted U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Kathleen Sebelius over the failure of the Obamacare exchanges and again called on her to resign.

“People are angry. Millions of Americans are scared,” Roberts said. “They don’t know whether they are going to have coverage in a matter of weeks. They don’t know what that coverage will include. They now are getting letters from their insurance companies they don’t understand. In fact, more people are losing their insurance than are signing up on the website. And they are being directed to a website that doesn’t even work.

“We don’t often talk about life and death in the context it deserves, but at this time it is real, and it means the difference between life and death for many Americans who are at a loss for what to do. And we know, Madame Secretary, that fixing the website won’t ever fix the uncertainty and ramifications that result from this law.”

In early October, Roberts was the first member of Congress to call for Secretary Sebelius’ resignation after the failure of healthcare.gov and amid concerns about the security and privacy of personal health and financial information in the exchange.
