KU Prof has holiday shopping advice

money cash(AP) — A University of Kansas researcher says Black Friday shoppers who want to save a little money should use cash instead of credit cards when making purchases.

Assistant marketing professor Promothesh Chatterjee issued a statement Tuesday saying shoppers who use cash see their purchases much differently than those who use plastic.

Chatterjee says his research shows that marketers may be influencing how much people spend and what they buy by encouraging them to use credit cards.

He says people who use credit cards focus more on the benefits of a product, while those who pay with cash focus on its costs, including price, delivery time, warranty costs and installation fees.

Roberts: Iran Deal Bad for U.S. & World Security

U.S. Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) today joined congressional colleagues from both sides of the aisle in expressing deep concern with the Iranian nuclear deal reached over the weekend in Geneva, Switzerland.

“Any deal that gives billions in sanctions relief to the world’s largest state sponsor of terror while letting them continue to enrich is a bad deal,” Roberts said. “I see no reason to trust a regime that sponsors terrorism, undermines the international community through its support for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, imprisons Christian pastors for exercising their faith, and constantly threatens the legitimacy of the State of Israel.”

The six-month interim deal, apparently reached after a year of secret negotiations between the Administration and members of the Iranian regime, provides at least $7 billion in relief by dismantling existing sanctions against the Iranian nuclear program. In exchange, Iran has agreed to halt further enrichment above 5 percent and allow some access to International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors. However, critics allege the deal fails to dismantle a single centrifuge for uranium enrichment, dismantle the Arak facility’s plutonium-producing heavy water reactor, or effectively ensure the destruction of Iran’s stockpile of 20-percent enriched uranium, all while fundamentally recognizing Iran’s right to enrich.

Roberts continued, “It is no surprise we see the Iranians spiking the football while [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu calls this a ‘historic mistake.’”

In September, Roberts joined several colleagues in expressing concern over the prospects of such a deal in a letter to President Obama.

Wrong way I-70 driver hospitalized – UPDATE

Ellis county SheriffUpdate: The Ellis County Sheriff’s Department has provided an update in the case of a car stopped after driving the wrong direction in I-70 early Monday.

According to Sheriff Ed Harbin, authorities were alerted that a vehicle was traveling  westbound in the eastbound lanes.  An officer stopped the vehicle at mile marker 154.

The officer determined that the driver, 61 year old Steven Brungardt of Victoria, was very confused and required medical attention.

Brungardt was transported to Hays Medical Center via Ellis County EMS, where he later died.

Harbin couldn’t provide specifics on Brungardt’s medical condition or cause death.

Original Story: Law enforcement authorities responded early Monday morning to report of a wrong way driver on I-70 at mile post 155, just west of Hays.

The driver was safely stopped. However, due to health reasons, the driver was unable to follow the officer off the interstate.  Ellis County EMS was called just after 6 a.m.  They transported the driver and an officer to Hays Medical Center.

The law enforcement officer had to leave the his vehicle and the wrong way driver’s car in the median.

No other details are currently available. Stay tuned to Eagle Radio and check Hays Post for more as it becomes available.

Thanksgiving Travel Tips from KHP

KHP-Patch2.jpgTroopers will be out on the roads to assist motorists throughout the holiday weekend

This week Kansas roads will be busy with holiday travelers going to and from their destinations. The Kansas Highway Patrol will mobilize, along with other law enforcement organizations across the state, to participate in the annual Special Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP). The enforcement program is courtesy of a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation.

“Once again, the Kansas Highway Patrol will be out on Kansas roadways during the busy Thanksgiving holiday. Every year we strive to make our roadways safer, ensuring motorists get to their holiday destinations. Please enjoy the holiday with your loved ones, and make it memorable for all of the right reasons. Remember, designate a sober driver and buckle everyone up, every trip, every time,” said Lieutenant Joshua Kellerman, KHP Public Information Officer.

The Patrol and other agencies will focus on impaired drivers, child passenger safety laws, and seat belt use among travelers of all ages. Because of the STEP campaign funding, there will be more law enforcement officers on Kansas’ streets and highways during the upcoming Thanksgiving holiday period when travel increases in Kansas and across the nation.

According to preliminary KDOT stats, during the 2012 Thanksgiving reporting period, there were 629 collisions, resulting in 203 injuries, and five deaths. Of these crashes, 32 were alcohol related, resulting in 23 injuries, but no deaths. For 2012, the reporting period was from 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 21 through Sunday, November 25 at 12:00 (102-hour reporting period). The reporting period for this year will be from 6:00 p.m. the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving, through 11:59 p.m. the Sunday following the holiday (Nov. 27-Dec.1).

Before hitting the road for travels, the Patrol encourages motorists to take the following things into consideration:

Make sure your vehicle is in good working order. Check tires’ tread depth and air pressure; check the vehicle’s fluids, exhaust system, and other mechanical equipment. If traveling in cold conditions, make sure added precautions are taken for the cold weather.
The vehicle should also be stocked with items that would be beneficial if you were involved in a crash, such as: bottled water, blankets, non-perishable food, first aid kit, and flashlight with extra batteries.
Make sure to plan your route of travel and communicate this to your family, in case you are involved in a crash or experience mechanical problems with your vehicle.
Charge your cell phone before you leave in order to make important calls if needed.
Dress for the weather. If you plan to travel in cold weather make sure you have a coat in the vehicle, and warm shoes in case you need to stop for any reason.
Check your route of travel for road conditions and/or construction work or other delays before you leave. The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) provides an improved 511 system for motorists to use. Call 5-1-1 from any phone.
The Patrol reminds motorists not to drink and drive, and do not let your friends or family drive while impaired. If you consume alcohol, call a friend, family member, or taxi service for a sober ride home.

If travelers are in need of assistance on a Kansas highway, they can dial *47 (*HP) for the Kansas Highway Patrol, or dial *582 (*KTA) on the Kansas Turnpike, and we’ll send someone to assist. We wish all of our travelers a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

KC Chiefs mascot recovering from injury

KC Wolf
KC Wolf

(AP) – A man who has performed as the Kansas City Chiefs’ mascot for more than two decades is in stable condition after a weekend accident at Arrowhead Stadium. His attorney said Monday the injuries appear to have been caused by human error.

Dan Meers has played KC Wolf since the mascot’s inception in 1989. He was seriously injured Saturday while rehearsing a zip line routine ahead of Sunday’s game against the San Diego Chargers. No details about the injury have been released.

Attorney Tim Dollar says Meers’ injuries appear to have been caused from how an outside company secured the riggings. He says an investigation is pending.

According to the website mascothalloffame.com, Meers previously performed as Fredbird, the St. Louis Cardinals’ mascot, and the University of Missouri’s mascot Truman the Tiger.

Crews Investigating Cause of Power Outage

The approximate area affected by Monday's brief power outage.
The approximate area affected by Monday’s brief power outage.

Some Hays residents may have noticed a power outage Monday morning.  Midwest Energy’s Corporate Communications Manager Mike Morley told Hays Post that the incident occurred around 9:00 am Monday, November 25th.

Morley said that the affected area impacted around 1100 customers.  He added that some residents were without power for as little as 8 minutes and some for as long as 70 minutes.

At this time, officials don’t know what caused the outage, except that two switches in the substations opened up due to voltage irregularity.  Crews had to close those switches and make a couple of other minor repairs to reestablish service.  They are now working to determine the cause of the outage to help prevent future incidents.

Common causes of such an outage include:

  • Animals getting into a transformer or the substation itself trying to get warm
  • Tree limbs touching a line
  • Ties that secure the lines becoming loose
  • A pole is hit with a vehicle or piece of equipment that causes lines and transformers to be jostled

Morley said that while this was one of the city’s larger outages he’s seen, crews were able to restore service fairly quickly. He added that anyone experiencing an outage should call Midwest Energy right away.

“The reason for that is it helps us establish a better boundary. We have an outage management system that says this is the likely area that is impacted but if people call in, it enables us to set a more accurate boundary and helps us in the restoration of service.”

Midwest energy can be reached at 1-800-222-3121 or 625-3437.
