Illnesses linked to KS restaurant

jimmy johns logoMore than 40 people have become ill after eating at a Garden City sandwich shop.

The Finney County Health Department issued a news release Saturday saying it’s working in conjunction with Kansas Department of Health and Environment, Kansas Department of Agriculture and Jimmy John’s to find the cause of the numerous cases of gastrointestinal illnesses that have been associated with eating at Jimmy John’s in Garden City.

Those who’ve become sick have eaten at Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches, 503 East Kansas Avenue, on December 11, 2013 or after, according to Finney County Health Department Administrator Ashley Goss.

Currently the Health Department has been notified of more than 40 cases of the gastrointestinal illness. The symptoms are much like the stomach flu, including vomiting, diarrhea, and fever in some cases, muscle and joint aches as well as fatigue.

The Kansas Department of Agriculture has conducted their inspection of the facility as required.

Any findings have been corrected and require no further action.

Dual voter registration lawsuit moved to US court

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A legal challenge over whether Kansas will create a dual voter registration system has moved to federal court.

The Equality Kansas lawsuit seeks to block Secretary of State Kris Kobach from creating a dual registration system, arguing it would violate voters’ rights to equal protection. The American Civil Liberties Union is representing the group and voters.

U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren was assigned to the case Friday. Melgren is also presiding over separate litigation seeking to force modifications in the federal registration form. Both lawsuits stem from disputes over Kansas’ proof-of-citizenship law.

Under a dual system, people who use the state form and comply with the proof-of-citizenship rule could vote in any race. People who use the federal forms and don’t submit citizenship papers could vote only in federal races.

Nine former Chiefs players join brain injury lawsuit

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Two NFL Hall of Famers are among nine former Kansas City Chiefs players who have joined a lawsuit that contends the team hid the risks of permanent brain injuries from repeated concussions.

Cornerback Albert Lewis and defensive end Art Still were added Saturday to the lawsuit initially filed this month on behalf of five former Chiefs players. Also joining the suit are Dino Hackett, Todd McNair, Fred Jones, Tim Barnett, Walker Lee Ashley, Emile Harry and Chris Smith.

All 14 plaintiffs were on the team between 1987 and 1993, a period when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place in the NFL.

The amended lawsuit also adds claims that artificial-surface fields during part of that time contributed to concussions.

Rural snatch & grab theft

police.jpgThe Ellis County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a crime of opportunity. According to Sheriff Ed Harbin, the incident happened sometime between December 16 and December 20 in the 2200 block of 350th Ave in Gorham.  A log splitter attached to a trailer was sitting next to a wood pile between two stumps.  Tire tracks indicate that a vehicle backed up to the log splitter, hitched onto it, and drove off.  No other items were taken.

Sheriff Harbin stressed that it’s important for people to leave some sort of identification such a numbering system on items that would otherwise be hard to identify. One such example would be to write a series of numbers on the item out of plain sight that would allow the proper owner to identify and claim the property if stolen.  A description wasn’t immediately available, except that it was a hydraulic log splitter attached to a trailer.

Anyone with information on this or any other case is asked to call the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department at 785-625-1040.
