Kansas Wheat: 2013 Year in Review

MANHATTAN — This year has been monumental for Kansas Wheat organizations. The Kansas Wheat Commission and Kansas Association of Wheat Growers leadership came together to begin industry changing endeavors. Looking back at 2013, it will be remembered as one of the first steps taken in positioning Kansas as a national leader in the wheat industry. Here is the Kansas Wheat Year in Review.4

The Kansas Wheat Innovation Center: Construction ended just over a year ago on the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center and the hardhats are back to add more. The building has become a hub for wheat research and soon will play host to more tenants. Two areas are under construction to be finished into a molecular lab and genetics lab. The new space will be used by Wheat Genetic Resource Center and Kansas State University scientists. Throughout the year, the Center has also garnered visitors from all around the world, to see firsthand wheat farmers investing in their future.

Ohio Woman Wins National Festival of Breads: Rosemary Leicht, Bethel, Ohio, won the $2000 Grand Prize at the 2013 National Festival of Breads bread-baking competition in Manhattan June 22. Leicht’s recipe, “Onion Parmesan Cracker Bread” was selected from among eight finalist recipes baked and judged at the public competition. The first ever youth category winner was Mardi Traskowsky from Herington, Kansas with her recipe “Family Italian Bread.” Finalists traveled to Manhattan from across the country to learn more about wheat production and compete in the contest. Meanwhile, hundreds of Kansans came to the National Festival of Breads to attend baking demonstrations.

Wheat Crop Grades Well: Quality of the 2013 Kansas winter wheat crop varied across the state along with production and dramatically differing growing conditions. The crop was most hard-hit by the drought in the western third where it produced lower yields and smaller kernels but noticeably higher proteins. The crop benefited from timely rains in the central and eastern portions of the state producing higher than average yields, with slightly lower proteins but good kernel milling characteristics. Overall, the National Agricultural Statistics Service reported 85 percent of the crop graded #1.

World’s First National Science Foundation Center for Wheat: The National Science Foundation named Kansas State University as the lead institution for the world’s first Industry/University Cooperative Research Center focused on wheat. The NSF I/UCRC Wheat Genetics Resource Center will be housed at the Kansas Wheat Innovation Center where scientists will conduct research on wheat germplasm improvement, using the gene bank of the Wheat Genetics Resource Center. The center is the first National Science Foundation established research center for any crop plant and will focus on improving the production and disease resistance of wheat and serve as a training hub for graduate students and young researchers.

Brazil Becomes Major HRW Customer: The U.S. wheat industry’s biggest hard red winter  2013 year to date customer came as a pleasant surprise to Kansas wheat farmers. Due to a temporary tariff change, Brazil, one of the world’s leading wheat importers, leaned on the U.S. in 2013 to feed their need for wheat purchasing 3.15 million metric tons or 115.6 million bushels. Brazil is South America’s largest wheat importing market, but typically only purchases about 400,000 MT per year from the U.S., instead relying on fellow Mercosur member Argentina for the bulk of its wheat imports. This year, however, both Brazil and Argentina’s wheat crops fell short. That supply situation, combined with concerns of inflation in Brazil, caused exports to South America to skyrocket, up 863 percent from last year’s sales. The next biggest hard red winter purchaser is the traditional customer, Nigeria, at over 1.5 MMT purchased this marketing year.

25 Billionth Bushel State Fair Booth Wins Champion Award: Kansas Wheat’s 25 Billionth Bushel themed booth at the Kansas State Fair took home a champion ribbon for the best inside exhibit. It centered on the growth of the Kansas wheat industry and the productivity of farmers. The booth featured the actual 25 billionth bushel of wheat harvested in the past 100 years of Kansas farming by Mike and Tanner Brown in Colby, Kansas. Located in the Pride of Kansas Building, the Kansas Wheat Booth was a main attraction with a timeline of the progression of wheat farming in the state of Kansas.

HUTCHINSON, Kan. (AP) — A defense attorney is seeking a mental competency hearing for a Hutchinson teenager suspected of starting a fire that killed his mother and sister.

Other motions filed this week seek an independent evaluation of the 14-year-old boy and access to his school records.

The boy is charged in juvenile court with two counts of first-degree murder after the Sept. 26 fire at the family’s home. He is also charged with the attempted first-degree murder of his father and aggravated arson.

The request for an independent evaluation is in response to the state’s motion to prosecute the teenager as an adult.

A hearing on the three motions was set for Jan. 2. A hearing on whether to prosecute the boy as an adult is still unscheduled.

Four arrested in Hutch counterfeiting case

HUTCHINSON (AP) — Hutchinson police said people have been arrested as suspects in about 20 cases of counterfeit money being used in the city this month.

Police Sgt. Tyson Meyers said three men were arrested Tuesday and a woman was arrested Wednesday. He said the three men apparently worked together but the woman’s connection to the cases is unclear.

The Hutchinson News reported officers believe most of the counterfeit cash seized so far came from the home of a 37-year-old man arrested Tuesday. They found a scanner and printer at the man’s home.

So far this month, police have collected more than 50 $5 and $20 bills.

Room and board will increase 2.1% at FHSU

Fort Hays State EntranceTOPEKA (AP) — Room and board at the state’s universities will increase next year.

The Kansas Board of Regents on Wednesday approved increases ranging from 3.9 percent at Kansas State University to 2.1 percent at Fort Hays State University. Regents staff says the increases are necessary to cover anticipated inflation, as well as facility maintenance and improvements.

The Lawrence Journal-World reported rates will increase 3.6 percent at Emporia State, 3 percent at Pittsburg State and 2.5 percent at the University of Kansas.

The regents staff said Wichita State’s plan will cost $10,164 per year but that figure is not comparable with the previous year because of new housing on campus.

All the Kansas schools except Wichita State still will be below the $8,737 average room-and-board charge for four-year public institutions in the Midwest.

Kansas woman facing tougher charges in July murder

CourtLAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — A Topeka woman is facing tougher charges in the shooting death of a 51-year-old Lawrence man.

Twenty-year-old Brittny Adams pleaded not guilty Wednesday to premeditated first-degree murder in the July death of Gary Edens. She was charged with second-degree murder before Wednesday’s preliminary hearing.

Prosecutors increased the charges after a former Douglas County Jail inmate testified that Adams frequently bragged about killing Edens at his home. She also allegedly told a man who was with her to kill Edens’ son but the son escaped injury after a struggle.

A detective testified that Adams told him she and the man went to Edens’ home while searching for two girls who abandoned her in Topeka and took off with her car.

Hays Post
North Central Kansas Technical College is looking for a culinary arts instructor. The culinary arts program has been based at the NCK Tech campus in Beloit, but the current instructor is retiring. The college also has partnered with the planning to development the convention center in Hays.

Don Benjamin, dean of Hays campus, said the idea is to establish the program in Hays, using convention center facilities to help train students.

Benjamin said NCK Tech will hire the best candidate possible and, if Hays is chosen as the location, the college would establish the program in fall 2014.

Benjamin said both NCK Tech and Fort Hays State University will have some input on the design aspects of the design of the potential convention center.

“Ours is more of the basic space requirements as well as the necessary equipment, commercial kitchen situation to be able to teach from,” he said, noting the college also has approached private businesses with the possibility of leasing space for the program.

The current program in Beloit has 10 to 12 students but is limited by space.

Benjamin said he believes that number could double if the program would be relocated to a new facility in Hays. NCK Tech hopes to have an instructor hired by February.

Planning for a convention center has been in the works for years, with the Hays City Commission tasking the Ellis County Coalition for Economic Development to provide a viable plan.

While no developer has been chosen, preliminary concepts show a convention center being built west of Vine and south of the Holiday Inn Express. Preliminary funding concepts would include a community improvement district, which would establish an increased sales tax in the area to pay off bonds used in construction.

The coalition has formed a nonprofit corporation that could be the owner of the proposed facility, while FHSU has been discussed as the operator.

Man seeking new trial in Kansas teen’s homicide

court-gavelWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas man convicted of killing a 14-year-old girl in 2006 is awaiting a Sedgwick County judge’s ruling on his request for a new trial.

An attorney for Elgin “Ray Ray” Robinson argued in Sedgwick County Court Wednesday that his client deserves a new trial because he did not have adequate defense during his trial for killing Chelsea Brooks. The girl disappeared from a Wichita skating rink. Her body was found later in a Butler County field.

Prosecutors argued Wednesday that Robinson received adequate representation.

The Kansas Supreme Court upheld Robinson’s convictions for capital murder and other charges in 2012. His current appeal was filed in civil court.

District Judge Patrick Walters did not say when he would rule.

Chiefs’ Smith building off perfect performance

Chiefs logoKANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) – Alex Smith was perfect. At least, in terms of quarterback rating.

Smith was 17 of 20 for 287 yards and five touchdowns without an interception last weekend against the Raiders. That gave him a quarterback rating of 158.3, joining Trent Green in 2003 as the only players in Chiefs history to have a perfect mark.

Noteworthy? Sure, especially considering the Chiefs needed all the offense it could muster in a 56-31 shootout with the Raiders that kept them in the AFC West title hunt.

Now, Smith will try to build on his perfect performance when the Chiefs play the Colts on Sunday. Their game at Arrowhead Stadium could be a preview of a first-round playoff game that would be played in Indianapolis.
