No. 19 Florida beats No. 13 Kansas

Kansas LogoGAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) – Scottie Wilbekin scored a career-high 18 points, Dorian Finney-Smith added 15 and No. 19 Florida held on to beat No. 13 Kansas 67-61 Tuesday night.

The Gators bounced back from a buzzer-beater loss at No. 9 Connecticut last week and extended their home-winning streak to 21 games. The latest victory came in the Big 12-SEC Challenge and surely will be meaningful when the NCAA tournament seeds are settled in March.

Wilbekin, who injured his right ankle against the Huskies eight days ago, made 7 of 12 shots and added six assists.

Freshman Andrew Wiggins led the Jayhawks (6-3) with 26 points and 11 rebounds – his first double-double and both career highs. Kansas has lost two straight.

The Gators (7-2) led by as many as 18 points in the first half, but Kansas made it 60-55 on Wiggins’ 3-pointer with 55.8 seconds remaining. It was his second 3 in the final 1:20.

Florida closed it out from the free throw line – barely.

Kansas State edges South Dakota

Kansas_State_Wildcats7-342x250MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) – Marcus Foster had 18 points and Shane Southwell contributed 17 points and six rebounds as Kansas State beat South Dakota 64-62 on Tuesday night.

Kansas State (6-3) overcame a poor second-half performance from the foul line to top the Coyotes. While holding a 63-62 lead with 2 seconds left, Thomas Gipson converted on the first of two free throws to seal the victory.

Trevor Gruis matched his season high with 18 points for South Dakota (3-6), while Adam Thoseby added a season-high 16.

South Dakota opened strong, charging to a 15-4 lead with 10:59 remaining in the first half. Having returned four of its five starters from last season, the Coyotes used their experience to punish a depleted Kansas State frontcourt with 16 points in the paint in the first half.

The Wildcats twice cut the lead to three but South Dakota maintained a five-point advantage at the break.

Huelskamp: Budget Deal is Another Spending and Tax Increase

Rep. Tim Huelskamp
Rep. Tim Huelskamp

Today, House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan and Senate Budget Committee Chairman Patty Murray announced their agreement on another bipartisan budget deal.

Congressman Tim Huelskamp made the following statement:

“This budget agreement is more of the same that we’ve seen out of Washington for years. Instead of providing solutions, it continues the insider game of playing ‘Let’s make a Deal.’ The deal provides for a $63 Billion spending increase, raises taxes, and adds to the deficit now – all in exchange for another mirage of spending reductions sometime in the future, most of them 5 years after Obama leaves the Oval Office.

In so doing it blows up the only real significant spending restraint passed since the Republicans assumed the majority in the 2010 election, it violates the Republican House Conference agreement hammered out in January of this year in Williamsburg, and it does next to nothing to implement the House budget passed earlier this year.”

Efforts underway to prevent hepatitis C outbreaks

Kwiatkowski
Kwiatkowski

(AP) — The criminal case of a traveling medical technician who worked at Hays Medical Center, and  who infected dozens of patients with hepatitis C through tainted syringes is pushing individual hospitals, state lawmakers and federal officials to close the loopholes he exploited.

David Kwiatkowski was sentenced last week to 39 years in prison. He has admitted stealing painkillers and replacing them with saline-filled syringes tainted with his blood. He had worked as a cardiac technologist in seven states before being hired in New Hampshire in 2011, moving from job to job despite being fired numerous times over drug allegations.

Joseph Perz of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says Kwiatkowski helped unmask a problem that was a growing concern for the CDC and has added momentum to broader drug diversion prevention efforts.

Jury seated in Kansas porn trial

no-child-porn(AP) — A Shawnee County jury has been selected for the trial of a Topeka man facing more than 100 counts of child pornography.

Jason W. Hachmeister is charged in Shawnee County court with 108 counts of sexual exploitation of a child. He’s also charged in another case with killing his mother in 2011.

Prosecutors say the child pornography was found on Hachmeister’s personal computer during an investigation into the September 2011 killing of 58-year-old Sheila R. Hachmeister of Topeka. Jason Hachmeister’s homicide trial in Shawnee County is scheduled to start Jan. 21, 2014.

The  jury was selected Tuesday for his trial on child pornography charges, with opening arguments to follow.

Kansas kids to keep learning cursive

cursive(AP) — Kansas State Board of Education members want public school students to continue to learn how to write in cursive even in the age of keyboarding and text messaging.

The 10-member board unanimously approved new handwriting standards for public schools Tuesday, saying that students are expected to learn to write in cursive in the third grade and write legibly in cursive by the fifth grade.

Multistate academic standards adopted by Kansas in 2010 don’t require schools to teach cursive, and some educators question whether it’s still a necessary skill and whether they have time to teach it.

Also, because Kansas doesn’t have annual, statewide tests on handwriting, the board’s standards have little teeth. But board members said they’re hoping the strong language in the standards mean they won’t be ignored.

KS Supreme Court tells Kline No

Former KS Attorney General Phill Kline
Former KS Attorney General Phill Kline

(AP) — The Kansas Supreme Court has denied former Attorney General Phill Kline’s request for a rehearing to consider modifying a ruling that indefinitely suspended his law license.

The denial was signed Tuesday by Justice Dan Biles on behalf of the court. Kline’s attorney Tom Condit filed the motion with the court last week.

Condit, who didn’t immediately return messages seeking comment, argued that investigators in Kline’s case were biased and facts about the former attorney general’s investigations into abortions were misrepresented.

The Supreme Court in October agreed with a state disciplinary panel that said Kline repeatedly misled or allowed subordinates to mislead others, including a Kansas City-area grand jury, during his investigations. The unanimous decision came after disputes between Kline, a Republican, and critics of his tactics.

Salvation Army – We Need Volunteers

salvation army kettle and bellThe Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help collect donations this holiday season.  April Chesney, the newly appointed County Coordinator for the Salvation Army, told Hays Post that she’s set small kettles in various businesses around town, but she’s looking for volunteers to ring bells and accept donations at the larger kettles.

Last year, over $16,000 was raised from donations in Hays and the surrounding area.  Chesney said that while she’s not setting monetary goals given her short time frame to collect, she is happy to be stepping into her role in such a giving community.

All money collected in Ellis County will stay in Ellis County to be distributed through local organizations.  The money will be used to help with items such as rent, bills, groceries, and utilities. Chesney says that First Call for Help helps with a majority of the screening.

In recent years, The Salvation Army has received a lot of negative backlash for stating that any money donated will not be distributed to homosexuals.  Chesney says that the screening for local funds is just to establish income eligibility, and sexual orientation will not be a factor here as it may be in larger communities.

Chesney added that this Saturday December 14th Wal-Mart is partnering with the local Salvation Army for Fill the Truck, where people can purchase toys to be distributed to area children. She also said that this year, even with a short time to collect donations, she’s excited to kick start collection efforts.

“Me stepping in as somebody new and not originally from the community, seeing what Ellis County is capable of as far as taking care of their people and giving so generously; it just makes me excited and hopeful coming into this position.”

Anyone wishing to volunteer can call First Call for Help at 785-623-2800.

Trial delayed for man accused in fatal meth dose

meth-bust(AP) — A first-degree murder trial has been postponed at the request of lawyers for a 32-year-old Wichita man accused of injecting another man with a lethal dose of meth.

Dang Sean was scheduled to stand trial this week in Sedgwick County District Court. The was continued Tuesday at the request of the defense. A new date for the trial has not been set.

Prosecutors say they plan to seek a Hard 50 prison sentence if Sean is convicted.

Sean is accused of injecting 34-year-old Shawn Lindsey with a lethal dose of meth on Jan. 11, 2013. Prosecutors allege that Lindsey was killed to settle a debt that may have involved illegal drug transactions.

Crews Respond to House Fire

Ellis County rural fireThe Ellis County Rural Fire Department responded to a structure fire Monday.  According to Fire Chief Richard L. Klaus, the incident happened shortly after 11:00 p.m., in the 800 block of Moscow St in Munjor.

Klaus said that there were people in the home when the fire started.  The occupants smelled the smoke, exited the building and called 911.  The electrical fire began in a ceiling fan and burned a hole through the ceiling, causing extensive smoke damage to the second story.

Fire Companies 9, 5 and 4 from Hays, Victoria and Munjor responded to the call and were able to extinguish the blaze.  Crews were able to leave the scene shortly after 2:00 am.

Klaus estimated that based on the extent of the damage the house will be a total loss.  There were no injuries.

2:40 p.m. Update   According to Riley County Police:  At approximately 6:02 Tuesday morning, the Riley County Police Department received a 911 call regarding shots fired at 150 East Poyntz Ave. (The Quality Inn and Suites).  Police officers from Riley and Pottawatomie counties responded, and once on scene observed a subject discharging a firearm outside of the hotel.  As events unfolded, officers ordered the subject to cease firing and drop the weapon.  When the subject failed to do so and continued firing, officers on the scene returned fire and struck the subject multiple times.  Officers immediately rendered first aid and summoned medical assistance for the subject.  There were no injuries to officers or innocent bystanders during this incident.

The subject was transported to Mercy Regional Hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds.  Further details about the suspect’s medical condition have not been released at this time.

“Given the involvement of RCPD officers in the shooting, I have asked that the Kansas Bureau of Investigation handle the investigation.  The KBI has agreed to do so and is now the lead agency in the case.  The subject has been arrested for Aggravated Assault, additional criminal charges are possible pending completion of the investigation and referral to the Pottawatomie County Attorney’s Office.” Said Director Brad Schoen regarding this morning’s incident.

The names of the officers involved will not be released at this time pending further police investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigations.

The Riley County Police Department would like to thank the Pottawatomie County Sherriff’s Office, the Kansas State University Police Department, the Kansas Highway Patrol, the Wamego Police Department, and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation for their assistance in this matter.
