Jana’s Campaign PSAs – VIDEO

Jana's Campaign PSAJana’s Campaign Inc. recently collaborated with a public relations class at Fort Hays State University in the creation of two short video public service announcements.  The two videos coincide with the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence Campaign which ends today, December 10th.

Jana’s Campaign Executive Director Eric Sader says that the videos, which are designed to promote awareness and incite change, couldn’t have come at a better time.

“The timing is impeccable, with December 10th also marking Human Rights Day and the four-year anniversary of the kick-off of Jana’s Campaign.”

The videos were created under the guidance of Hsin-Yen Yang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor for the Department of Communication Studies at FHSU. Media Advisor Dr. Cynthia Garrety provided additional assistance.  Contributing students included: Nicole Barnaba, Jayde Boyder, Lexi Copeland, Samantha Drees, Tiffanee Heinzen, Leah Shriwise, Jamie Sproul, and Brandi Wright, all undergraduate communication majors. FHSU student Kyle Zerr volunteered in an acting capacity.

Jana’s Campaign Inc. was created in honor of the late Jana Mackey and other victims of domestic violence. It is comprised of a committed group of activists with the single mission of reducing gender and relationship violence.

Clark hails importance of ethanol industry in Kansas

(AP) — A retired Army general who is now a lobbyist says a strong ethanol industry is critical to national security because it reduces U.S. reliance on foreign oil-producing countries.

Wesley Clark, co-chairman of the national group Growth Energy, spoke Monday at the newly reopened Pratt Energy ethanol plant in southern Kansas. He is scheduled to testify Wednesday in front of the U.S. Senate Clean Air and Nuclear Safety subcommittee.

The Pratt plant opened in 2008 but went into bankruptcy and closed a year later. Pratt Energy bought the plant in 2012 and spent millions of dollars on renovations before opening it in September.

It currently produces 20 truckloads of ethanol and 45 truckloads of dried distillers grains for livestock per day

Midwest Energy Career Training Scholarship Project

Midwest EnergyMidwest Energy and CoBank have established a $120,000 scholarship and career training project for people from Midwest Energy’s service area interested in careers requiring technical training from community and technical colleges in central and western Kansas.

“Too many young people from rural communities believe that to be successful, you have to leave your hometown, get a bachelor’s degree and work in a big city,” said Bob Muirhead, Midwest Energy’s Director of Economic and Community Development. “The reality is we have many businesses with good-paying jobs right here, looking for people with particular training and skill sets. This new scholarship program will help local individuals pursue these opportunities.”

The pilot project, to be administered jointly by the Kansas Department of Commerce and the Kansas Economic Development Institute, will offer a one-stop connection for trainees interested in jobs requiring career and technical training, and the businesses in central and western Kansas looking to hire them. KANSASWORKS centers, local businesses and participating technical and community colleges will collaborate to identify trainee candidates, who will then participate in customized training programs designed by industry. Priority will be given to those seeking training for jobs in high-demand occupations, including HVAC, plumbing, welding, and construction and electrician trades.

“This pilot project will connect trainees with employers who need people now, and remove the barriers to those individuals acquiring the skills and credentials needed in rural Kansas communities,” said Kansas Commerce Secretary Pat George.

The program is being made possible through a $100,000 grant from Denver-based CoBank, and a matching $20,000 grant from Midwest Energy.

“In order for our rural communities to continue to grow and thrive, business and education must work together to generate greater levels of opportunity,” said Robert B. Engel, CoBank’s chief executive officer. “This new scholarship program is all about creating options and, in the process, giving both young people and rural businesses a solid foundation for the future.”

“We would like to thank CoBank for making these funds available,” said Muirhead. “Their generosity will help businesses throughout Kansas find urgently needed workers, while strengthening our communities.”

For more information about the project, contact Zoe Thompson at the Kansas Department of Commerce, 785-296-0205 or e-mail [email protected].

County Commission Approves Equipment Purchases

Ellis County courthouseThe Ellis County Commission approved three bids for equipment purchases for Public Works at their weekly meeting Monday night.

  • 2015 Western Star Truck from I-70 Truck Repair for $80,500
  • Dump Box from Hays Truck and Equipment for $23,150
  • Mower Tractor from Sellers Tractor for $94,900

There was a lower bid for the dump box, by Truck Parts, but there was a concern because of the lack of information, that they may have trouble finding replacement parts so the Public Works Department recommended approving the Hays Truck Equipment bid.

The Commission also approved taking bids to purchase a new 2013-14 SUV for Fire District 1. Ellis County Rural Fire Director said the last time he had a new vehicle was in 2005 and it has over 147,000 miles on it.

Klaus said they have already sent out letters requesting bids to local dealers as well as to a dealer in Topeka and one in Wichita. The bids are due back by Wednesday.

The vehicle will be purchase using money that was left in the Fire District’s Budget.

The Commission also got a monthly update from Holly Dickman with the Ellis County Extension

Former Kan. gov. finalist for Time Person of Year

SebeliusFeelings are mixed in Kansas over the inclusion of former Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as one of 10 finalists for Time magazine’s Person of the Year award.

Democratic Kansas House member Dick Ward said it’s an honor for everyone whenever someone from the state is recognized for influencing major world events.

But Republican Rep. Brenda Landwehr called the selection ridiculous and said she couldn’t think of anyone less deserving for the award.

Sebelius serves as U.S. secretary of Health and Human Services. She has been in the spotlight since the Oct. 1 problems with the launch of the national health care website.

Other finalists include Pope Francis, Texas tea party Republican Ted Cruz, performer Miley Cyrus and whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Kansas audit finds issues with data protection

Computer Hack(AP) — An audit found that Kansas government agencies need to do a better job protecting sensitive information stored on their computer systems.

The Legislative Post Audit Division found “chronic weaknesses” in several security controls, including weak passwords and software vulnerabilities. The information was presented Monday in a closed session of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Information Technology.

The audit looked at eight agencies, including the Department of Administration, attorney general and the Kansas Public Employees Retirement System.

Auditors concluded that controls were insufficient to prevent hackers from accessing confidential information held by the agencies, including Social Security numbers, tax information and other personally identifiable information.
