The Kansas Room at the Hays Public Library will celebrate Amelia Earhart’s solo flight across the Atlantic at 10 a.m. Jan. 11 in the Schmidt Gallery. A one-hour documentary about her life and mysterious disappearance will be shown. Coffee and donuts will be provided.

Earhart, a native of Kansas, has intrigued people for decades with her ambition and mysterious disappearance. At 34 years old, she was the second person and first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean earning her the Distinguished Flying Cross from Congress in 1932.

She also earned the title of first solo flight from California to Hawaii in 1935. In 1936, she began to plan a round-the-world flight. It was during this flight in 1937 that her mysterious disappearance, along with her co-pilot, occurred. There are many theories about what happened to them, along with conspiracy theories, but no evidence has ever been found.
