One of the best comfort foods in the middle of winter is a bowl of steaming soup. During the 17th annual Soup’R Bowl, the Humane Society of the High Plains will provide both comfort and good fellowship with 13 different kinds of soup and a special sweet table.
The event will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 26 in the Unrein Room at the Ellis County Fairgrounds Schenk Building. Guests vote for their favorite soup, and the winning chef will be presented with the prestigious Golden Ladle Trophy.
For $5, each guest will taste all the soups and then choose one full bowl to enjoy. Tickets are available at the Virginia Miller Animal Shelter, 2050 E. Highway 40; Hays Veterinary hospital, 1016 E. Eighth; Fur Is Flying, 2204 Vine; and at the door.
Baked potato, fiesta taco, creamy broccoli, white chili, homemade chili, chicken taco and green chili are some of the soups vying for the Golden Ladle.
Beside door prizes, names also will be drawn for two exquisite quilts made by Tobi Neuberger and Sherry Leiker. Michael Jilg has donated one of his unique lithographs. The raffle will also include five gift certificates from The Rose Garden and steins or mugs from Western Beverage.
Odus Trober is the emcee and sound engineer.
Cookbooks of chefs’ recipes will be available for $5.
The Humane Society will have a table with pictures of adoptable pets and information about the shelter. Membership forms will be available for new members and for those who want to renew their memberships.
Framed pictures from the Picasso Gato project will be on display and for sale. These are true cat artwork. Nontoxic colors were put on energetic kitten feet, and modern artwork was created.
The Humane Society of the High Plains housed over 1,200 animals in 2013 from Hays, Ellis County, Northwest Kansas and Central Kansas. An astounding 90 per cent found forever homes or were sent to rescue groups. The HSHP ultimately accepts all animals, but sometimes asks owners to wait to surrender their animals when space opens up. The funds raised by the Soup’R Bowl will be used to help animals with special needs and to spay and neuter pets to make them more adoptable.
