Hays firefighters extinguished a porch fire Thursday morning at the corner of Fort and 33rd streets.

Hays firefighters responded to a structure fire at 109 W. 33rd at 11:13 a.m. Thursday.

The fire was contained to an uncovered back deck/porch area. As of approximately 11:30 a.m., the fire was extinguished and did not spread to the house.

From the scene, Hays Post reporter Becky Kiser reported one female occupant and a dog were out of the home and safe. Three fire trucks responded to the fire, and the Hays Police Department diverted traffic from the scene. Ellis County EMS also responded.

HFD Capt. Ryan Hagans said the most probable cause of the fire was ashes from the fireplace, which were placed on the wood deck Wednesday night. The ashes were in a metal container, an HFD press release said. The deck was a total loss, but there was no reported damage to the home.
