Western Kansas cooperatives suspend merger talks

Hays Post

Two western Kansas cooperatives on Wednesday announced on their websites that merger efforts between the companies have been suspended.

Moundridge-based Mid-Kansas Cooperative Association and Oakley-based Frontier Ag Inc. said Wednesday terms could not be agreed upon to join the two companies.

“At this time, directors for both organizations have not been able to agree on all of the terms required to develop a merger document,” Dave Christiansen, MKC president and CEO, said in a statement. “Both MKC and Frontier Ag believe growth is strategically critical for our respective memberships and both organizations plan to pursue future growth opportunities.”

Plans to resume talks have been “left open indefinitely,” the statement said.

MKC and Frontier announced plans to study a merger in September.

MKC has more than 200 employees in 34 grain locations, with a capacity of 29.3 million bushels. According to its website, Frontier has more than 280 employees at more than 30 locations across northwest Kansas, with the capacity to store more than 52 million bushels of grain.
