KBI: Scott City death investigation in its ‘infancy’

SCOTT CITY — Few details are being released regarding the Jan. 17 death of a 20-year-old Garden City woman.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation said last week that Sherree Kaye Smith, 20, was found unresponsive outside a Scott City hotel Jan. 17 and later pronounced dead.

“It is an active death investigation that is labeled at this time as suspicious,” Mark K. Malick, KBI special agent in charge, told Hays Post on Friday.

Malick said it is undetermined when autopsy results will be available.

The KBI last week asked for public help in locating Smith’s missing vehicle. A tip from a Garden City resident led to the vehicle being recovered in Garden City.

“The investigation is active and in its infancy,” Malick said.

The KBI and the Scott City Police Department continue to investigate the case.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Scott City Police Department at (620) 872-2133 or the Kansas Bureau of Investigation at (785) 296-8200.
