The deaths of three dogs in Ellis County has drawn the ire of the Humane Society of the United States.
In a news release today, the national organization said it was offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to arrest and conviction of those responsible for poisoning the dogs.
The incident, which reportedly occurred Dec. 18 in the 1300 block of Grand Street west of Hays, is being investigated by the Ellis County Sheriff’s Department.
All three dogs — two labs and a chihuahua — died after being poisoned with strychnine.
“This is a truly horrible crime. These dogs suffered immensely from the poison. Anyone who would kill helpless animals is not someone you want in your community,” said Midge Grinstead, Kansas state director for the Humane Society. “We hope that this reward will bring forward the information needed to seek justice for these dogs.”
Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin said Wednesday it remains uncertain whether the poisoning was accidental or intentional. His primary concern, he said, is ensuring the source of the poison is found to prevent other animals — or children — from encountering the deadly substance.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the sheriff’s office at (785) 625-1040.
