Fort Hays State baseball opened its MIAA slate with a win on Friday (Feb. 21) at Larks Park in Hays, defeating Pittsburg State 6-3. The Tigers moved to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the MIAA.
The Tigers took the early lead 1-0 on a Clayton Garland solo home run in the third inning, but Pittsburg State responded for all three of its runs on a Tory Stoffregen 3-run home run in the fifth to go up 3-1.
Fort Hays State immediately responded with four runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead back at 5-3. Kodie Fewin triggered the rally with a solo home run, cutting the lead to one. After a single and a hit batter, Garland knocked in the tying run with a double to the left center gap. Alex King followed Garland with a RBI single to put the Tigers in front 4-3 and then Horace Johnson had a RBI groundout with the bases loaded.
Fewin hit his second solo homer of the game in the sixth to extend the FHSU lead to 6-3, the eventual final. All six runs were charged to PSU starter Tyler Thompson, who lasted 5.2 innings.
Steven Federau tossed five scoreless frames of his 6.0 innings pitched, allowing all three PSU runs in the fifth. Federau faced one batter in the seventh before yielding to Drew Martineau for the final 3.0 innings. Martineau picked up his first save of the season, allowing just two hits and striking out two. Federau struck out four and allowed six hits in his outing.
The Tigers and Gorillas meet in the doubleheader of the four-game weekend series on Saturday, starting at 1 pm at Larks Park.
