Ex-Garmin worker admits theft of GPS devices

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A former warehouse worker at the Kansas headquarters of the Garmin International has pleaded guilty to stealing GPS devices that were later sold on eBay and elsewhere.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says 31-year-old Terrence Heathington pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of mail fraud.

Heathington was indicted in August on 40 counts of mail fraud. The indictment alleged he caused about 165 cases of GPS devices worth more than $1 million to be shipped to his home and those of high school friends living in Atlanta, Ga.

Heathington worked from March to September 2008 at Garmin in Olathe (oh-LAY’-thuh), where he lived at the time. He later moved to Atlanta.

Prosecutors say Heathington faces up to 20 years in prison at sentencing, which will be scheduled later.

Woman who hated her name allowed to change it to Sexy

NEWARK, Ohio (AP) — A central Ohio woman who loathed being named Sheila and wanted a moniker that reflects her personality has legally changed her first name to Sexy.

A Licking County judge on Tuesday approved the request from the 41-year-old Pataskala woman formerly named Sheila Ranea Crabtree.

In her application, Crabtree called her given name “the ugliest one out there.” She said if the court didn’t allow the switch to Sexy, she’d try to become known legally by her middle name, which she has used for years.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Crabtree told a judge her husband and teenage daughters approve of the change. When the judge asked why she chose Sexy, Crabtree said she’s fun and free-spirited and thought the change would make her complete.

Spearville school asked to remove cross

Screen Shot 2014-02-11 at 12.49.30 PMDODGE CITY, Kan. (AP) — A group wants a western Kansas school to remove a cross from the top of its building.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State says the cross on Spearville Elementary School violates the First Amendment. The group wrote Superintendent Daryl Stegman and Principal Marvin Hartzler in November in response to a complaint from a resident.

The USD 381 Board of Education reached an informal consensus Monday that it wouldn’t take any action on the cross until a lawsuit is filed.

The  group requested a reply from the school district within 30 days and sent another letter Jan. 9. The school district has chosen not to respond to the group.

Spearville, a town of about 775 residents, is northeast of Dodge City.

Victim of homicide at Kansas radio station identified

Police InvestigationWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Wichita police say a man who was killed at a Wichita communications building worked for the company.

Police identified the victim found at Steckline Communications as 25-year-old Daniel J. Flores. They say he had worked at the company for about two years.

An employee of the company found Flores’ body early Monday. Police say he died of blunt force trauma, and there were signs of a struggle.

Lt. Todd Ojile says several doors lead into the building and police found no signs of forced entry. He says it’s unclear if Flores was the intended target.

Officers are still processing the scene and no one has been arrested.

The company operates the Mid America Ag News Network and several radio stations.

FHSU Shooting Club, team benefit from Browning sale

FHSU University Relations

Jim Johnson, Medicine Lodge, was the winner of the drawing for an engraved set of two Browning Medallion Series A-Bolt rifles conducted recently by the Fort Hays State University Shooting Club and team of scholastic clay target shooters.

The drawing raised a total of $13,100 for the club. Club Sponsor Dr. Duane Shepherd, associate professor of health and human performance, said club members sold 262 of the 300 tickets at $50 each. Half of the proceeds, $6,550, goes directly to the club and half goes to the club’s trust account with the MidwayUSA Foundation, which provided the rifle free to the club specifically for the drawing. The foundation also matched the $6,550 and put a total of $13,100 in the club’s trust.

The Midway Foundation was created by Larry and Brenda Potterfield, owners of Midway USA, a catalog and Internet retailer, to encourage shooting teams at universities and colleges.

“Our half will pay entry fees for the national tournament,” said Shepherd. Fourteen shooters from the FHSU club will compete in the national tournament later this spring.

The rifles were a full-sized version and a junior model, both in .257 Roberts caliber.

The drawing was held at Joe Bob Outfitters, 2011 Vine. The winning ticket was drawn by Joseph Boeckner, owner, a former student at FHSU.

The Shooting Club now has more than $300,000 in trust at the MidwayUSA Foundation. Funds raised by the club and place in the trust are matched at a 3-to-1 ratio by the foundation. The club can draw up to 5 percent of the funds each year.
