Tiger baseball drops ninth straight

Fort Hays State baseball fell by a score of 8-5 in the final game of a four-game series with Nebraska-Kearney at Larks Park in Hays on Monday. Nebraska-Kearney swept the four-game weekend series. The Tigers dropped to 3-12 overall and 2-10 in the MIAA, while Nebraska-Kearney moved to 13-6 overall and 7-5 in the MIAA.

A hit batter and a walk ballooned into a pair of runs for the Lopers in the first and they extended the lead to 4-0 in the third by stringing together a pair of doubles and a single.

Casey Sedbrook cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run to right center field.

Steven Federau held the UNK offense in check for three innings before allowing a two-run home run in the seventh. Austin Unrein entered at that point and allowed a solo home run, making it 7-2 in favor of UNK. The Lopers added a run in the eighth to extend their lead to 8-2.

FHSU cut the lead down to 8-5 with three runs in the eighth. Gabe Cook had a RBI single and a pair of errors produced another run. Cooper Langley added another RBI single.

Carlos Palomo shut down the Tigers over the final 1.1 innings to earn his first save of the season for the Lopers. He preserved the win for starter Michael Hahn who went 7.2 innings and struck out eight. He allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits.

Nathan Zimmerman lasted just one inning in his start and took the loss. He allowed two runs. Steven Federau, the starter in game one of the series, went 5.1 innings of relief, allowing four runs, but struck out four. Austin Unrein pitched the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs and striking out one.

Fort Hays State hosts Bethany College in a single non-conference game on Tuesday (Mar. 11), 3 pm at Larks Park in Hays.
