ST. PAUL, Neb. (AP) — Authorities say a large wildfire that charred thousands of acres in central Nebraska has been extinguished.

On Thursday fire officials were still tallying up how many square miles had been blackened and farm buildings destroyed by Wednesday’s blaze north of St. Paul in Howard County. There were several reports that some livestock were killed, but it was unclear how many. There were no reports of any people being injured.

Winds gusting past 40 mph whipped the flames, resisting the combined efforts of fire crews and equipment from at least 17 departments.

In southeast Nebraska, firefighters from several departments battled a fire that charred an estimated 300 acres north of U.S. Highway 34, near Union.
