MISSION — A Plainville couple has been honored by Special Olympics Kansas for their efforts to “make a difference.”

Dave and Mary VanSchuyver received the organizations “Making a Difference” award as program volunteers of the year for 2013. They are local program coordinators for Solomon Valley and host the West region basketball tournament, recruit volunteers and handle fundraising and meals for athletes.
Special Olympics Kansas called them “exceptional team leaders.”
Award winners will be officially recognized at opening ceremonies of Summer Games, scheduled at 7 p.m. June 6 at Cessna Stadium on the Wichita State University campus.

• Business of Year: KOAM TV/FOX 14, Pittsburg
• Coach of the Year: Irene Smith, ANW Co-op, Iola
• Event Volunteer of Year: Rob Emery, Pittsburg
“It is an honor to recognize outstanding service to our organization, and these winners represent the best of the best,” said Chris Hahn, president and CEO of Special Olympics Kansas. “They have made a significant difference in the lives of our athletes, in our programming, and in our mission.
