The Hays High baseball team opened their new season with a split against Kapaun Mt. Carmel at Indian Field Thursday. Hays drops the opener 3-2 but came back to take game two 7-5.

Game 1: Kapaun 3, Hays 2
Kapaun rallied from a 2-0 deficit, scoring single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh inning. They pushed ahead the go-ahead run on a passed ball.
The Indians scored in the second and fourth in building a 2-0 lead.
Lane Downing takes the loss, allowing three runs, one earned, on four hits over 6 2/3 innings. Downing struck out four and walked two.
Game 2: Hays 7, Kapuan 5
The Indians scored three in the first and four in the fourth in building a 7-1 lead. Kapaun tallied two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Kade Parker retired the Crusaders in order in the seventh to end any comeback hopes and pick up the save.
Connor Rule had three hits and drove in three. His two-run single in the first gave the Indians the early lead, one they would never give up. Cade Parker and Cole Schumacher also had two hits.
Marcus Altman allowed just one run on four hits over 3 2/3 innings and picks up the win.
