TOPEKA — Kansas officials faced a deadline Monday for submitting an application to federal authorities to renew the state’s Medicaid waiver for a program that helps those who have suffered traumatic brain injuries.

But officials at the Kansas Department for Aging and Disability Services said a problem with a computer portal at the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services caused them to miss today’s filing deadline.

“There have been technical problems with the CMS portal that is used to submit the application,” said Angela de Rocha, a KDADS spokesperson. “We hope to be able to submit it later this week.”

The agency held a series of public forums earlier this month to get feedback on some proposed program changes that would tighten eligibility for the services. The proposal met opposition from many of the people who attended.

The state’s current waiver is scheduled to expire June 30.

About 600 people currently receive services through the program.

De Rocha said the agency’s application probably wouldn’t be available for public review until it has been submitted to CMS.
