Donald E. “Don” McGinnis, 82, Hays, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 ,at the Via Christi Villages in Hays.
He was born July 2, 1931, in Esbon, Kansas, the son of Ivan and Frances (Lorence) McGinnis. On September 1, 1958, he married LaVon Schumacher in Hays. He was a truck driver for Arrow Trucking and was a salesman for Schumacher Shoe Store. He was a U.S. Army veteran at the end of the Korean War, was a member of the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church, the Bishop Cunningham Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and the St. Nicholas of Myra Third Degree Knights of Columbus Council No. 10044. He received a MS degree from Fort Hays State University in Industrial Arts.
Survivors include his wife, of the home, three sons Chuck McGinnis of Hays, Mike McGinnis and wife Carol of Vista, CA, and Tony McGinnis and partner Regina Steenbock of Carlsbad, CA, four daughters, Pat Hammerschmidt and husband Bob of Hays, Myrna McGinnis and partner Loretta Fletcher of Wichita, Kathy McGinnis and partner J.J. Legleiter of Hays, and Barb Herrman and husband Troy of Hutchinson, a brother Darrell McGinnis and wife Grace of Hays, and a sister Connie Dodd of College Station, TX, seven grandchildren, Ryan Hammerschmidt of Hays, Blake, Shayde, and Tobyn McGinnis all of Hays, Allie Nicholson of Manhattan, Kirstin Benedict of Hutchinson, and Brandon Herrman of Hutchinson, and a great grandson Kain Nicholson of Manhattan.
He was preceded in death by a brother Larry McGinnis.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 11, 2014, at the St. Nicholas of Myra Catholic Church. Burial with military honors by the Hays VFW Post No. 9076 will be in the St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5:00 until 8:00 pm and on Friday from 1:00 until 1:45 pm, all at the Hays Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 1906 Pine. A Parish Vigil service will be at 7:00 pm followed by a combined third and fourth degree Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30, all on Thursday at the funeral home.
