NW Kansas farm will use grant to research mobile poultry processing

ATWOOD — Chris Sramek of Sramek Family Farm in Atwood recently was recommended to receive a $22,500 grant from the North Central Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education Program.

A grant will be used by a group of High Plains poultry producers will complete feasibility, planning, implementation, purchase and fabrication of a mobile processing unit to slaughter and process pasture-raised poultry for direct consumer sales in rural Kansas, rural Colorado, and a large growing urban market in Denver.

The grant was awarded as part of NCR-SARE’s Farmer Rancher Grant Program, a competitive grants program for farmers and ranchers who want to explore sustainable solutions to problems through on-farm research, demonstration and education projects. NCR-SARE’s Administrative Council includes collection of farm and non-farm members from regional farms and ranches, the Cooperative Extension Service, universities, federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

For the 2014 Farmer Rancher Grant Program, NCR-SARE, which covers 12 states, awarded more than $486,000 to more than 40 projects ranging from $1,370 to $22,500.
