Former County Clerk denies wrongdoing

Vote 001PITTSBURG, Kan. (AP) — The former Cherokee County clerk responsible for changing voter registration status of more than 4,800 voters denies any wrongdoing.

Cherokee County Clerk Rodney Edmondson says his office has discovered that about 4,838 voters may have had their statuses improperly moved from “active” to “canceled” between Dec 2010 and March 2011, while Crystal Gatewood was county clerk.

Edmondson says most of the registrations were likely canceled improperly, and that his office is working to remedy the errors.

But Gatewood told The Pittsburg Morning Sun  that she followed procedures and was in “constant” communication with the Secretary of State’s office during the voter purge.

The Secretary of State’s office says it didn’t instruct Gatewood to remove names without following longstanding procedure.
