
Abilene–The Annual D-Day remembrance event held at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum in Abilene will be a little bit bigger this year.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the historic day when Allied forces stormed the beaches of Normandy to fight Nazi Germany.
The Museum and Library will hold a remembrance ceremony the morning of June 6th on their campus in Abilene. Samantha Kenner, Communications Director explained that part of the ceremony will include a wreath laying and a reading of the order of the day.
“We’re going to do an order of the day re-enactment with an actor portraying Dwight Eisenhower and reading the order of the day that was given to each of the participants in the operation, the Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force,” she said.
Other events scheduled for that weekend include a C-47 flyover, concerts including the 1st Infantry Division Band and the Symphony at Sunset. Panel Discussions featuring first hand accounts of the day will also be held.
“Whether it’s people talking about their role on the home front as well as those that were on the battlefield.”
The event is free to the public. However, a $5 recommended donation is being asked for those who attend the concerts.
