CLAFLIN- The investigation of the weekend fire at Camp Aldrich in Barton  County continues.

Doug Hubbard, Claflin Fire Chief said his crew could see the flames from town when they responded to the blaze at 5:30 Saturday morning.

“We were on the scene for over 12 hours,” said Hubbard. “Fortunately the humidity was high or we might have  also been fighting a fire in the surrounding sand hills. It is so dry out there.

“The State Fire Marshal’s office did an investigation,”  said Hubbard. “At this time I think it’s safe to say it was accidental but we aren’t exactly sure what started the fire.”

Camp Aldrich is owned by Barton Community College and hosts many events including Camp Hope and was scheduled to host the 2014 Barton Foundation Clay Shoot on May 4th. There is speculation at this time the college will rebuild.
