WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The Justice Department says it has reached a $2.9 million settlement with Hope Cancer Institute and its owner to resolve allegations that it falsely billed federal health care programs.

The announcement Monday settles allegations that the cancer treatment facility in Kansas and its owner, Dr. Raj Sadasivan, submitted claims between 2007 and 2011 for chemotherapy drugs that were not provided to federal health care beneficiaries. The government contends the doctor instructed employees to bill for predetermined dosage levels, when lower dosages of the drugs were actually provided.

The lawsuit filed in federal court in Kansas was brought by three former employees under whistleblower provisions of the False Claims Act that allow private citizens to sue on behalf of the government and share in any recovery.
