An individual is in custody at Larned State Hospital after leading law enforcement officials on a high-speed chase Monday afternoon.
According to Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin, officers clocked a westbound car traveling almost 110 mph east of Hays just after 2 p.m. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it turned off I-70 at Exit 159 and headed north on Vine Street, weaving through traffic.
The driver then headed westbound on 48th Street, cut through a pasture and a fence next to the interstate and got back on I-70 traveling west.
Harbin said the driver rear-ended a Kansas Highway Patrol car during the chase before it came to an end approximately 2 miles into Trego County. The individual was taken into custody.
According to Harbin, the driver is believed to have mental health issues and was transported to Larned State Hospital. At this time, it was unclear if charges would follow the incident.
