An accident northeast of Hays sent five people to the hospital Monday afternoon.

According to Ellis County Sheriff Ed Harbin, at about 1 p.m. Monday, a 2005 Dodge Caravan, owned by Developmental Services of Northwest Kansas, was westbound on Feedlot Road and failed to stop at a stop sign at Toulon Avenue. The van was struck by 2008 Chevy Impala traveling southbound.

Harbin said the one of the clients in the DSNW van lost a hat, and it apparently became wedged under the brake pedal. The driver could not stop, forcing the van to run the stop sign.

Three passengers and the driver of the van and the driver of the car were transported to the Hays Medical Center for treatment, according to Harbin.
