JUNCTION CITY — Despite cold and windy temperatures, approximately 30 Kansas Legislators enjoyed a day of fishing at Milford Lake on Monday.

The Kansas Legislative Sportsman’s Caucus held the eighth annual Larry Magill Sportsman’s Challenge at Milford Lake.

Rep. Gary Hayzlett, R-Lakin, has attended the event each year.

“I think the reason that we do it here is because it’s very close to Topeka,” he said. “The legislative veto session will start on Wednesday, so it works good for those coming back.”

Not only does the event allow Geary County to show off its assets, but it also gives local leaders a chance to talk with legislators about Statehouse issues.

Geary County Commissioner Florence Whitebread discussed the elimination of mortgage registration fees with a group of legislators.

“You know they’re trying to take it off and the counties want it kept on and so it’s kind of a battle right now,” she said. “I see I’m on the downhill side because they really want to take it off, but I’m still stressing we need to keep it. We need that money to supplement our taxes.”

The event is sponsored by the Kansas Association and Insurance Agents and the Geary County Convention and Visitors Bureau.
