May 22, 1951, was a deadly day in Hays.

Heavy early morning rains 63 years ago today produced one of the worst flood disasters in Hays, according to records from the National Weather Service in Dodge City.

Six people were killed.

Fort Hays Kansas State College was flooded as well as the southern part of Hays when Big Creek erupted from its banks.  There is now a 1.8 mile levee between Big Creek and the campus, according to records at FHSU Forsyth Library.

Heavy rains had fallen earlier in the month and contributed to the May 22 flooding.

Salina Post

SALINA–Two Dickinson County men have been charged with several counts of felony theft and felony criminal damage to property in connection with the theft of three antique cars in Saline County.

Sheriff Glen Kochanowski said 53-year-old Douglas Gable of Herington, and 47-year-old John Kasper of Hope were involved in taking the cars that included, a 1939 Plymouth 4-door sedan, a 1949 bullet nose 2-door Studebaker sedan, and a 4-door 1950 Studebaker sedan. The cars were owned by Gary Hansen of Salina, and had been parked along a hedgerow in a field on Tinkler Road.

Sheriff Kochanowski believes the cars may have been sold for scrap. The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office assisted the investigation. That investigation continues, and more arrest are possible. The cars were worth an estimated $5,350.

Kansas City among finalists for GOP convention

PHILIP ELLIOTT, Associated Press

GOPWASHINGTON (AP) — Two cities in the mix to host the next Republican National Convention are out of the running.

Republican Party officials say Las Vegas and Cincinnati are no longer being considered for the 2016 event.

That leaves Dallas, Denver, Cleveland, and Kansas City, Missouri, under primary consideration.

Dallas is believed to be a major player in the competition, in part because of its coalition of wealthy donors with ties to the Bush family and the oil industry.

In a letter to the Republican National Committee, Las Vegas cites scheduling and facility problems in withdrawing its convention bid.

Las Vegas was thought to be a leader in the competition to win the convention, although some party officials worried that the city’s reputation for excess could overshadow the event.

Legislator deploying to Kosovo

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. (AP) — A state House member from northeast Kansas has decided against running for re-election as she prepares to deploy to Kosovo with the 35th Infantry Division.

Democrat Melanie Meier, of Leavenworth, is a lieutenant colonel in the Kansas Army National Guard.

The Leavenworth Times reports Meier was recently notified of her pending deployment to Kosovo as part of the National Guard’s ongoing mission in NATO peacekeeping operations.

Meier said in a news release it would be unfair to voters if she won re-election knowing she would miss the 2015 legislative session.

Meier was first elected to the Kansas House in 2008 but mobilized in early 2009 for a yearlong deployment to Iraq. She resigned her seat but regained it in a special election upon her return.

Toyota recalling 430,500 vehicles in 3 recalls

ToyotaDETROIT (AP) — Toyota is recalling 430,500 vehicles for three separate safety problems.

The company said Thursday it’s recalling 370,000 Sienna minivans in cold weather states because road salt can corrode the spare tire carrier under the vehicle and the tire can fall off. The recall includes Siennas from the 2004 through 2011 model years.

Toyota is also recalling 50,000 Highlander and Highlander hybrid SUVs from the 2014 model year because the car may not properly calculate the size of the front passenger when determining whether to fire the air bag. And it’s recalling 10,500 Lexus GS 350 sedans from the 2013 model year because the brakes could activate without warning.

Toyota says there have been no accidents or injuries connected to the defects. Dealers will repair the vehicles for free.

During the past decade, Thomas has served on the board of directors for the KMA, the League of Kansas Municipalities, the Kansas Municipal Electric Association, and has been a hospital auxiliary member.

She has served as mayor of Stockton for 12 years and was the first African-American female mayor in the state of Kansas. Thanks to her direction, new water lines and a new water plant have been constructed, the city is currently working on a new sewer lagoon project, an old city building has been repurposed as the police station, and the city has received a grant to make a number of city buildings more energy efficient.

Recently, the city also received a grant from the Kansas Housing Resources Corporation for the construction of four moderate income houses, with construction slated to begin this spring.

The KMA consists of 355 mayor members throughout Kansas, and exists to advance the proficiency of Kansas mayors and improve the quality of life in Kansas communities. As part of its efforts, the KMA annually recognizes individuals like Thomas who have gone above the call of duty to provide exceptional community leadership.

Ellis volunteers put a fresh coat on sunflowers in the streets

By NICK BUDD
Hays Post

ELLIS — Residents continued a nearly 30-year tradition Wednesday night by repainting the sunflowers that cover the streets of the town.

sunflowers

There are six sunflowers located on the corners of Eighth and Washington,Ninth and Jefferson, Ninth and Washington, 10th and Washington, 10th and Dorrance, and 12th and Washington.

“It started when the governor was coming to town one year for a big parade, so we painted the sunflowers in the streets,” said resident JoAnne Keller, who has helped to organize the painting each year.

Keller said several people have noticed the sunflowers when they have drove through the town.

“We had two school teachers from Topeka who drove through and they said they were so surprised when they saw the sunflowers in the streets,” she said. “I think we’re the only city that does this.”

Approximately 15 people helped out this year with the painting.
