Government: no need to park recalled GM cars

General Motors GMDETROIT (AP) — U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx says there’s no need to tell owners of recalled General Motors cars to stop driving them.

He says in a letter to senators that government engineers have found that if owners follow GM’s advice, there’s little safety risk to driving the cars.

GM is recalling 2.6 million small cars worldwide to replace ignition switches that suddenly can slip out of the run position and shut off the engine. That can knock out power-assisted steering and cause crashes. It also disables the air bags. GM says at least 13 people have died in crashes from the problem.

GM is urging owners to remove everything from their keychains. Foxx says that until the switches are replaced, the safety risk is “sufficiently mitigated” by an empty key ring.

House votes to hold ex-IRS official in contempt

STEPHEN OHLEMACHER, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House has voted to hold a former Internal Revenue Service official in contempt of Congress for refusing to testify at a pair of committee hearings about her role in the agency’s tea party controversy.

Lois Lerner directed the IRS division that processes applications for tax-exempt status. A year ago, Lerner publicly disclosed that agents had improperly singled out tea party applications for extra, sometimes burdensome scrutiny.

An inspector general’s report blamed poor management but found no evidence of a political conspiracy. Many Republicans in Congress believe otherwise.

House Democrats say Wednesday’s vote was little more than an election-year ploy to fire up the GOP base.

Judge refuses to stay order over voter citizenship

Voter IDROXANA HEGEMAN, Associated Press

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — A federal judge in Wichita has refused to stay his order for federal election officials to immediately enforce Kansas and Arizona laws requiring new voters to document their U.S. citizenship.

U.S. District Eric Melgren on Wednesday denied requests from the U.S. Election Assistance Commission and voting rights groups to stay his ruling while the case goes to the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Melgren ordered the commission to proceed without delay on his March directive to immediately modify its national voter registration form. The March ruling requires the agency to add special instructions for Arizona and Kansas residents about their states’ proof-of-citizenship requirements.

Arizona and Kansas officials contend their state’s requirements prevent voter fraud. Critics of such laws argue they suppress voter turnout.

USDA: 5 Kansas counties declared drought disasters

droughtWICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated five counties of south-central Kansas as disaster areas because of production losses caused by drought.

Sen. Jerry Moran said Wednesday the agency has declared Butler, Kingman, Reno, Sedgwick and Harvey counties as primary disaster areas. The designation lets farmers and ranchers seek federal assistance.

The declaration also makes producers in 12 contiguous counties eligible for help. Those counties are Barber, Chase, Cowley, Elk, Greenwood, Harper, McPherson, Marion, Pratt, Rice, Stafford and Sumner.

Moran says farmers and ranchers in the 17 counties may receive federal disaster help such as the emergency loan program and the supplemental revenue assistance payment program.

Kansas to host Florida in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

Kansas Athletics

IRVING, Texas – National powers and defending regular-season men’s basketball champions in each of their respective conferences, Kansas and Florida will square off in the second SEC/Big 12 Challenge, Dec. 5 in historic Allen Fieldhouse, the two leagues and ESPN announced Wednesday.

The Kansas-Florida contest is one of two in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge that will pit preseason-ranked teams in the early ESPN.com “Fab 50” ratings. Kansas is at No. 4, while Florida is No. 7 in the early poll. No. 6 Texas will play at No. 1 Kentucky on Dec. 5 in the Challenge. Last season, the Big 12 won the Challenge by capturing wins in seven of the 10 meetings.

In last season’s inaugural Challenge, then-No. 19 Florida defeated then-No. 13 Kansas, 67-61, on Dec. 10 in Gainesville. The two teams would climb the national rankings for the remainder of the season with Florida at No. 1 the final four weeks of 2013-14 and Kansas as high as No. 5 on Feb. 24. Both teams won their regular-season conference championships and Florida won the SEC Tournament, as well. KU finished 25-10 and 14-4 in the 2013-14 season and entered the NCAA Tournament a No. 2 seed, while Florida went 36-3 overall, 18-0 in the SEC and was the overall No. 1 seed of the 2014 NCAA tourney.

Though there have only been five games in this series, the Kansas-Florida matchups have been highly touted. Kansas leads 3-2, with three of the five meetings being top-10 nationally-ranked contests. Four of the five meetings has seen at least one team ranked in the top 10.

In the first meeting, No. 5 Kansas defeated No. 6 Florida 69-63 in Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 7, 1994. KU was ranked No. 3 when the Jayhawks defeated the Gators 69-64 on Jan. 11, 1996, in Gainesville. No. 7 Florida bested No. 2 Kansas in the third meeting 83-73 on Nov. 29, 2003, in the consolation finals of the Preseason NIT at Madison Square Garden. Prior to last season’s meeting in Gainesville, No. 10 Kansas defeated top-ranked Florida 82-80 in overtime on Nov. 25, 2006, in the championship game of the Las Vegas Invitational. Florida went on to win its second-straight NCAA National Championship that season, while Kansas claimed the national title the following year in 2008.

Hays Post

There are now two seven-passenger vans in Hays taking military veterans from the Hays VA clinic to the Wichita VA hospital for medical treatment. The second van was donated recently by Auto World, owned by Dick and Kay Werth.

“It’s a terrific service for vets,” according to Mike Dreiling, adjutant treasurer of the Disabled American Veterans Fort Hays Chapter 18. One van drives directly from Hays to Wichita; the other picks up veterans in several area towns and along the route to Wichita.

On Thursday, Rick Kennedy, volunteer director at Wichita’s Robert J. Dole Regional VA Hospital, will be in Hays for a special ceremony to thank the Werths for the donation.

Following that, Kennedy will host a meeting addressing the benefits of being a volunteer and helping veterans.

“Right now, we really need more volunteer drivers for our vans,” Dreiling said.

Darrell Loreg, senior vice president of Fort Hays DAV, is a longtime volunteer driver. It’s often a 12-hour day for the retiree — and he loves it.

“Some of these guys will even give me a hug when we get back to Hays,” Loreg said. “They’re so grateful for the ride.  It’s a free service.  Without it, what would they do?”

To be a volunteer driver, you must pass a physical and have a standard driver’s license.

The volunteer recruiting meeting starts at 5 p.m. tomorrow at LINK, 2401 E. 13th.

Nine indicted in Colorado in synthetic drug crackdown

DENVER (AP) — Nine people have been indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver as part of a national crackdown on synthetic drugs.

Federal officials said Wednesday that the nine people are from various states and some are also facing state charges. It wasn’t immediately clear whether they have been arrested yet or whether they have lawyers.

Among those indicted is John Gilbert Bowen of Las Vegas. Investigators say he ran a business which sent synthetic drugs to Wisconsin, Nebraska, Alaska, Ohio, Georgia and Illinois as well Colorado.

Synthetic marijuana has been linked to outbreaks of illness in Colorado and elsewhere. While real marijuana is legal in Colorado, synthetic marijuana blends marketed under names such as K2, Spice and Blaze are not.
