Portable shipping containers once again will be a topic of conversation at Thursday’s Hays City Commission work session.
The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall.

At a May 15 work session, the commission discussed crafting ordinances to regulate the containers, which led to a draft ordinance being created by city staff.
Several questions remain, however, according to a memo to commissioners from Jesse Rohr, superintendent of planning, inspection and enforcement.
Assistant City Manager Paul Briseno explained the unknowns:
There also is a question of how long owners of existing structures would be given to bring those containers into compliance with any new regulations.
The ordinance has yet to be formally proposed. Staff also researched how other Kansas communities handle the issue and found few have specific regulations, either treating them as they would any other structure or not regulating them at all.
